Plot: Jacki (Gina Gershon, who also served as a producer) has always wanted to be a rock star. But after years of struggling to make it, she's turning 40, and she's thinking of giving it up. Do you ever think about being 50 or 60 years old, hauling our gear around, passing out flyers, fighting with bookers, and still sweating around? she asks her bandmates. Faith (Lori Petty), the talented lead guitarist, gives guitar lessons to hyperactive teens on the side. Faith is seriously involved with the much younger Sally (Shelly Cole of TV's Gilmore Girls), the band's good-natured drummer. Tracy (Drea de Matteo of HBO's The Sopranos), the bass player, is a trust-fund baby with a substance abuse problem and a manipulative lowlife boyfriend, Nick (Ivan Martin). Jacki's thoughts of quitting are put on hold when the band gets a shot at a recording contract for an independent label and a gig opening for X. Then Sally's big brother, Animal (Marc Blucas, formerly of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer), arrives in town, fresh out of prison, and stirs up Jacki's romantic life. But when two tragic events shake the band, Jacki is again forced to consider finding something else to do with her life. Prey for Rock & Roll was written by Cheri Lovedog, based on her own experiences in the rock world. It was originally performed as a stage play at {~CBGB} in New York. The stage production was directed by Robin Whitehouse, who gets a writing credit for the screenplay. The film marks the directorial debut of accomplished film music producer Alex Steyermark. It was shown at the {~2003 Sundance Film Festival} and the {~2003 Tribeca Film Festival}. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Low budget...
Added 2/15/2009

This movie is a below average movie. You can tell that the budget was limited for this movie. Don't get me wrong, Gina Gershon does a good acting job, but some of the others actors just don't pull it off. The best thing about this movie is that it shows how unglamorous being in a band can be, and what hard work it is.
It's too bad that this movie had such a limited budget. Gina does an OK job in singing, but the movie is titled incorrectly. The band that this is about is a punk band, not a rock & roll band. So, the title is very misleading. Punk and Rock & Roll are not the same genre, so it should have been titled "Prey for Punk".
Gina is a good singer when she sings slower melodies, but she doesn't know how to sing punk or rock & roll.
She is incredibly attractive though. So, if you just want to see her looking hot, then buy this. If you want a good quality film, skip this one.

One for Gina's fans
Added 11/11/2008

If you're a Gina Gershon fan, you're likely to give PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL a higher rating. She's the best thing about this clichéd musical drama.

The Clam Dandys are four female punk rockers (Gershon, Drea de Matteo, Lori Petty, Shelly Cole) who have been struggling to eke out a living as professional musicians. Just when looks as though they'll finally get their big break, relationships begin to implode as they learn how exacting the price of fame can be.

Although it's based on a semi-autobiographical play by co-scripter Cheri Lovedog, PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL is essentially the same old cautionary tale that the movies have been selling us for years. In fact, if you take away the punk rock milieu and the lesbian love scenes, what's left is a plot Elvis Presley used in about a dozen films. And like far too many Elvis movies, the songs in PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL are uniformly forgettable, making a convincing case that the group's obscurity really is deserved.

But Gina Gershon makes an extremely believable rock & roll chick (Gershon really has done live concert tours) and gives the film a credibility it otherwise wouldn't possess.

Music biz in it's purest light

Caught this on cable & was totally enthralled - as a member of a rock band
(altho the only female) I can say with honesty this film has some of the seamier sides that are the reality of this business as well as the lifestyle some have fallen under. Gina Gershon is completely believeable
as are Drea, Shelly and Lori Petty (making for one hell of a performance);
to know Gina also did the vox etc as well? This IS the rawk-life kids!
It might not appeal to the masses but this film is a work of art.

LONG LIVE ROCK
Added 9/11/2008

Great movie, if you love rock and roll, play rock and roll and believe in the heights and depths that music takes us to, you will appreciate this flick. Having been through these ups and downs in my life, I thought for a second I wrote this when I first saw it! No, i didn't, but It reminds me of why I started to rock and roll in the first place. Great job by Gina and cast!

Not a film for the uptight
Added 12/10/2006

Being someone who actually lives in LA, who used to frequent the rock clubs of Hollywood where this film is set (not Silverlake -- Argyle crosses Hollywood Blvd near Vine) and WeHo, who is friends with many musicians, straight, gay and in between, and who LOVES most expressions of rock, I love this film for its realism and passion. I wish there were more films that told it like it is instead of the plasticized fantasies than some reviewers seem to have expected.

Hot, but crude...too bad.
Added 2/15/2009

The best thing about this DVD is that it shows how demanding being on tour is, and how much crap you have to put up with. It also shows how difficult the job of being someone's personal assistant is. So, this DVD was informative.
The downside for me was how crude Gina Gershon is. I mean how many times does she have to flip off the camera. Is she 46 or 16?! She is incredibly hot, but I was disappointed that she had to be so crude. She and Lenny Kravitz butchered Joan Jett's "I Wanna Be Your Dog". It was shameful. Though, I am not sure that Lenny was the problem. Gina sings slow melodies great, but is not a rock & roller.
Gina Gershon got screwed by the distributor! Her distributor didn't even send out copies of the soundtrack, and didn't send out copies of the movies to be screened. She did countless interviews and no one had seen the movie or heard the CD. She has every right to be mad about that. It's as if they never cared about the film, even though they agreed to be a part of the project.
Again, this DVD was very informative and mildly entertaining.

Sooo Boring
Added 10/4/2007

I love Gina Gershon as much as the next guy or gal, but this was soooooo boring.I think she is a beautiful and charismatic performer, but the behind the scenes material here is like watching someone's home movies...sooo boring. I wanted more of Lovedog's music, less of the band ,her assistant, guitar tech, road manager and yes..... less Gina. A straight concert performance would have been much more satisfying.
