Plot: King: The Martin Luther King Story originated as a three-part miniseries, first telecast February 12, 13 and 14, 1978. Paul Winfield is starred as Martin Luther King, with Cicely Tyson as Coretta Scott King. The film covers the years 1954 through 1968, taking Rev. King from his first peaceful protests against segregation in Montgomery to his murder in Memphis. Scenarist/director Daniel Mann came under fire in 1978 for his adaptation of King's life, and for once the critics were right. Despite Winfield's masterful and accurate portrayal of King, the rest of the 6-hour drama compromises the truth with the hokiest of fabrications. Just a few examples: Sheriff Bull Connor's men walk out on him en masse when he threatens to hose down black schoolchildren; Mayor Daley warns King against protesting in Chicago, saying We have a reputation to protect; this is the home of Al Capone; King has a friendly meeting with Malcolm X in 1966, a full year after Malcolm X was killed....and so it goes. Martin Luther King certainly deserved a superior mini-series. Perhaps some day he'll get one. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

King still helps with what's going on in the world today!

I bought this movie for my son. He is absolutely thrilled to see it time and time again. He sits with his children and they discuss parts that they didn't know.
Thanks

Although I inadverently bought Region 1 by mistake and had to play it through my PC the human quality of the film far surpassed the playing quality. I had to sit very quietly after I watched it, to reflect. Although I thought I knew what was happening in the world at that time I realise I didn't have a clue. I obviously knew how the story ended but it ran the whole gamut of emotions from humility, love, hope and tragedy. It is as relevant today as then particularly with the current contest for the presidency of the USA. I would recommend this film to anyone, I wish it was on the National Curriculum. I defy anyone not to have a greater understanding of other people's beliefs, customs, culture, history and how it impacts on mankind after watching this excellent film.

Important, Worthwhile, Skimpy
Added 4/21/2008

If you're looking for a detailed review, look elsewhere. This IS an important, well done three part "docu-drama" that is well acted.

This review is added solely to point out that the "extras" are deplorably skimpy. The mini-"documentaries" aren't worth a lot (though what Ossie Davis has to say is interesting). One of the most significant figures in modern American history and we get this? The film itself deserves 5 stars. One star is deducted because this DVD could and should have been a far more profound teaching tool about King, the Civil Rights Movement and not only where we've come from but where we need to go from here.

Written and directed by Oscar/Emmy winner Abby Mann, "King" is a meticulous recreation of MLK¹s mystical odyssey from spirited young Baptist preacher to anointed spokesman for the vast non-militant wing of the Civil Rights movement. The revelation here is the extent to which King did not choose his thorny path, but was chosen, both by his own people and a higher power. Winfield and Tyson (who¹d starred together in the fabulous "Sounder" six years prior) are both superb as Martin and Coretta, and along with Mann¹s incisive script and a stellar supporting cast, they make "King" a powerful and enlightening experience.

Entertaining and educational. An excellent portrayal of a great american leader and how he changed history. I came away with a better understanding of U.S. history and of non-violent methods for creating political change.
