Plot: Toho's bid to merge the Godzilla series with their popular alien-invasion films resulted in this entertainingly goofy entry. The plot involves the discovery of the mysterious Planet X in our solar system, leading to a joint U.S./Japanese space exploratory mission. The explorers bump into some aliens with no fashion sense whatsoever (even for 1965), who claim their planet has been under constant attack from the powerful Monster Zero -- also known to Godzilla fans as Ghidrah, the three-headed monster from the previous year. The aliens suggest a deal with the Earthlings: if they can borrow Godzilla and Rodan to help rid their planet of Ghidrah, they will cure all of humankind's diseases in return. Of course, this is actually an elaborate ruse to rid the Earth of its monstrous defenders, leaving it vulnerable to invasion. As always, it's up to a handful of resourceful characters -- including token American Nick Adams and series regular Akira Takarada -- to save the day and return Earth's monsters for the requisite city-smashing finale. After a slow start, this movie serves up a good portion of flashy pyrotechnics and noisy monster-grappling but lapses into several moments of deliberate silliness (particularly Godzilla's goofy Irish jig) and rampant use of ill-fitting footage from previous monster installments. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Excellent job for releasing this video with both Japanese and English languages, and for the audio commentary. Now we just need a couple of other Godzilla films to be released like this. Fast shipping from Amazon, also.

TOHO FANS SHOULD BE HAPPY WITH THIS RELEASE! BETTER THAN GHIDORAH!
Added 9/30/2009

If you're a fan of Toho films then you have probably seen this outer space monster film. This release has a nice DVD transfer and the film is much better than Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster with a lot more monster action and better special effects. I remember Godzilla films fondly from my childhood and this one is memorable at times, but this is not the best in the series. Sure it's got lots a monsters(Godzilla, Rodan, and Ghidorah),but they have all been in better films.

The good news is this release has both the U.S. and Japanese version of the film with the Japanese version running about 6 minutes longer. There is a cool posters and stills gallery and a 9 minute documentary on Godzilla creator Tomoyuki Tanaka. It's not the best in the series, but Godzilla fans should dig this release for sure!

Nick never looked so good.

This is my favorite of what i call the "cheezer" G movies. The aliens are great and Nick Adams hams it up in style. This release is a very nice package. I already owned the U.S release but purchased this to upgrade my Japanese version from bootleg. Great movie and package.

It's All About Art Direction
Added 6/26/2009

The art direction is the real star of "Astro Monster" aka "Monster Zero". It feels like the end of the movie before any monsters show up and the fight scenes are simply the climax to a story that is, more than any other Godzilla movie, about people. If you can disregard what is sure to be an unquenched Monster-Thirst, you will enjoy this "futuristic" sci-fi epic and its gorgeous, if hilariously dated, art direction. This whole series is top-knotch and the transfer quality is excellent as are the extras, packaging, and price. This is on my Top 5 movies in the Godzilla canon even though G rates barely more than a cameo in it.

The worst of the series.

I didn't even like this when I was a kid, the only reason I got this now was because it was so cheap, coming in a package with a few other Godzilla films. Now that I'm older I know why I don't like it- the film is boring. It drags on, too much characters with boring plot acting poorly. The battles are brief and not that good. And the Godzilla dance is too corny- I have my limits. This film is not worth DVD release in my opinion.
