Ah' yes! Nothing says "1980's cheese" like Tobe Hooper's remake of INVADERS FROM MARS! I remember watching this film a long time ago, when I was younger. I could never recall the main details from the movie, I just remembered a creature resembling "Krang" (a living and breathing brain) turning people into zombies! It was always a movie that stayed with me, even after many years down the road. As I became older, my taste in Horror changed a little with age. I started to focus less on movies such as GREMLINS and GHOSTBUSTERS (not that I disliked them), while my attention shifted towards films like SUSPIRIA, HELLRAISER, FRIDAY THE 13TH and Tobe Hooper's own TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Now that I'm a little older and a little wiser (depending on who you talk to), I'm able to look back and acquire all the classic Horror movies from my youth on DVD.
INVADERS FROM MARS is a nice little flick, perfect for those rainy afternoons and Horror themed parties. The basic premise is a simple one. One dark night, a little boy witnesses a UFO landing in the distance, over a large hill in his back yard. Naturally scared, the boy tells his parents, who of course don't believe him. The next morning at breakfast, the kid starts to notice that his Father is acting a little funny. Zombie like funny and I'm not talking about the "Ha Ha" kind either! The boy eventually gets himself to school and the entire time he notices that the people all around him are acting weird. Eventually, both of his parents have turned into "zombies" and it looks like the whole town is next. The only person who is willing to help and listen to the kid is his school nurse. Together, these two enlist the local army soldiers to help them take down the aliens UFO thats turning people into zombies. By the way, the alien craft is miles beneath the ground, under the small town! Talk about quite the adventure huh'!?! It's too bad the movie loses steam about half way through.
I can't help and think every time I watch this movie that it might have been a little better, had the producers pushed for an R rating. I understand the fact that they wanted a younger audience to be able to see this film, but it really holds INVADERS FROM MARS back in terms of "pushing the envelope." Such 1980's remakes of classic "old school" Horror movies seem to pull it off better. The main ones that come to mind are THE BLOB and THE THING remakes.
Putting that problem aside, INVADERS FROM MARS does boast an impressive first half. The beginning of the movie is actually pretty creepy. The idea of being young and your parents turning into mindless zombies is a rather unsettling one. I think the movie falls apart at the point where the little boy and the school nurse team up with the army soldiers, about 35 minutes into the film. The theme then switches to a more "action" and "adventure" type of movie that really over shadows the whole Horror movie vibe the beginning half developed.
The aliens themselves are executed very well. They're huge and frightening, with giant teeth and freaky long arms! The basic ones look like giant MADBALLS (any kid from the 1980's knows what a Madball is), mixed with the monster from a cheesey 80's Horror movie called TERRORVISION. The main alien is a giant slug like brain, that lives within the ship and seemingly is a part of the UFO itself. It uses a machine that stabs some kind of electronic device to the top of the humans spine. Through this, they control the humans like mindless drones. The reason for this type of mind control is left unsaid, which makes things all the creepier for the viewer. Sometimes it's best to leave things unsaid, making room for the imagination. I like to think that the aliens use this primitive electronic device to convert humans into complacent, mindless, zombie slaves!
In the end, this is a nice little Horror movie. Nothing too shocking and no gore to be seen here. Gore Hounds, you're better off renting ALIEN, PREDATOR, THE THING (remake) if you want to see the red stuff! INVADERS FROM MARS is the perfect Horror movie to show your little Brother or Sister. It's perfect because it's not gory or bloody, it's not too scary and it's not offensive. It pushes the limits in terms of a PG rated film, while keeping things well in the realm of Horror.
Despite my own disappointments with this film (only three stars), I do consider this to be a 1980's classic "kiddie" Horror movie. It would make the perfect double feature with GREMLINS, GHOSTBUSTERS or POLTERGEIST. Check out the interesting alien costumes and special effects! They're worth the price of the movie alone.

AFTERTASTE
Added 9/13/2009
With so many SCi Fi moves written, Invaders is one of just a handful that always seems to find it's way to the few movies that I still can't watch with the lights out. This is for sure a movie that may have the scariest storyline of any SCi Fi movie ever made. It still gives me nightmares ever since, I first watched it back in the 80's. When you watch this movie It will leave you with an Aftertaste which you will never forget. The original does not compare to this remake. This movie is truly a classic.

This movie is one of the ultimate classics for early semi-comical horror sci-fi hits. Its just right for the younger audiences and also has some big names in their earlier careers. Movie arrived in a timely matter as expected.
