Plot: Two misfits struggle to make their way through the living hell that is high school in this independent comedy drama. Rodney (Ash Christian) lives in a small Texas town where most folks don't have much use for musical theater or much understanding of the gay lifestyle. Since the barely closeted Rodney wants little else besides a boyfriend and the leading role in a Broadway show, this doesn't make life easy for him, and he has only one close friend -- Sabrina (Ashley Fink), a smart and funny girl who happens to weigh nearly three hundred pounds. Sabrina encourages Rodney to embrace his inner fat girl, and he finds someone who understands his dreams when he strikes up a friendship with Mr. Cox (Jonathan Caouette), the school's drama coach, who also does a mean Liza Minnelli impersonation in his spare time. Written and directed by leading man Ash Christian when he was only 20 years old, Fat Girls was screened in competition at the {~2006 Tribeca Film Festival}. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Everyone Has A Inner Fat Girl

I really enjoyed this movie. THe comedy was good, and the actors were great. I wish it would have gone on more, but it was cute how it ended. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't afraid to be who and what they are!! Be PROUD!!

Earnest debut by a fresh director.

I bought "Fat Girls" after Joy Nash recommended it in her blog, along with "Disfigured". While I wasn't hugely impressed by it's general lack of depth, it still left me in a happy place. I was mostly happy with the lack of stereotypes, exception of the boy's mother, and there were definitely parts where I screamed with laughter and indignation. (The fat girl best friend actually had self worth! And danced at a dance! Minor miracle for a movie. And the gay guy wasn't a flamboyant parody - he was actually portrayed more as a human than a characature, which was refreshing.)

Annoying in places but good at heart.

Can't wait to see what else Ash Christian churns out as he matures artistically.

this is a very funny movie.
it brings up some serious issues that many people face everyday while in high school.
the only part that i was sort of upset with was the ending. i don't want to give it away, but i felt that it could have been a different ending.
overall, i would recommend it.

Fat Girls = Depressed Homosexual EMO's?
Added 7/8/2008

Hearing about this movies plot sounded interesting and I thought it was going to be a hilarious movie, but I ended up walking away from it depressed.

If you like the sound of a wining winging gay student who wants to be a Broadway dancer who thinks he is a fat girl trapped inside a mans body, while having an depressing emo friend and an emigrant dork hitting on her throughout the movie, then this one is sure to please you.

Disappointing
Added 4/4/2008

This is a very disappointing movie. The acting is barely passable, the filming is third rate at best, and the comedy sometimes looses its point.

Ash Christian plays Rodney, the main character, a somewhat overweight high school student who happens to be gay and is looking for his first love. His best friend is a more obese girl called Sabrina, Ashley Fink. Rodney considers himself as a fat girl, just like Sabrina.

There is Rodney's weird family; Sabrina's weird boyfriend, a Cuban refugee adopted by an African-American family; the weird Drama High School Teacher who poses himself as Liza Minnelli singing Broadway tunes in the local gay club; the weird British blond hunk school student (the only other gay kid in the school) who goes out with Rodney to school prom, but he is not interested in Rodney physically. I guess the word weird is stressed in most of the characters of this movie.

I did not like this movie, it is stupid to me. I did not like the fact that Rodney looses his virginity to the school teacher at the end of the movie. And his obese friend is presented as a joke. One good thing, kids in school did not pick on Rodney.

I think Mr. Christian was trying to do too much in this movie, however, he is talented, and the story is not a bad one.
