Plot: Fisher Stevens reprises his role of Ben Jahrvi, the co-inventor of the cute robot Number Five, in this sequel to Short Circuit. Since the last film, Ben has moved to the city, where he lives in a truck and sells toy Number Fives as a street vendor. Ben plies his trade until one day luck strikes in the form of Sandy (Cynthia Gibb), a toy buyer in dire straits who offers Ben $50,000 if he can quickly churn out a thousand toy robots. Offering to help the naive Ben is street con man Fred (Michael McKean), who becomes Ben's partner and finances the burgeoning enterprise through a loan shark. Ben and Fred begin to manufacture the toys in a warehouse; unfortunately, they soon find the building also houses the entrance of a tunnel dug by thieves, preparing to rob the bank across the street. With things appearing their bleakest, a crate arrives from Montana. Inside is the new and improved Number Five, who now insists on being called Johnny Five. Johnny Five has even learned to talk in a litany of phrases gleaned from television shows, and now helps Ben get started in the toy business. In the process, Ben and Johnny Five contend with the temptations and corrupt business practices of a big city environment. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Fun family movie

Sometimes you have to go back a ways to find a really decent family movie appropriate for small children. This one is missing the adult content, language, and disrespect found in most of today's proclaimed family movies.

Short Circuit has long had the misfortune of being unfavorably compared to its predecessor (aka Police Academy with Robots) I'm glad that it's been getting more positive feedback nowadays; then again, it was only a matter of time considering the many, many memorable quotes ("Los Locos kick your...")

My mom still likes the original, though. Okay, so you got Austin Pendleton and Ally Sheedy....but Guttenberg?? C'mon!

Much of Short Circuit's 2's success is owed to Fisher Stevens, who steps awkwardly in the forefront but quickly wins you over. His character, Ben, is no longer psudo-racist comic relief -- evidenced by the change of his surname from "Jabituya" (subtle) to Jahrvi. He will never receive the acclaim he deserves thanks to political correctness, but hey, if we let Lawrence Olivier get away with playing Othello, then surely we can't fault a Caucasian guy for playing an Indian guy, right? Stevens endows Ben with a lot of heart and plays him as a sort of human counterpart to Johnny Five; both are good-hearted but lack people skills. The script still overuses Ben's tendency to mispronounce English ("How time is fun when you're having flies.") Lame.

Also worthy of praise is Michael McKean as the shifty Fred Ritter. He does surprisingly well for a brand-new character and makes a great foil to the über-scrupulous Ben. The scenes where Ben grows increasingly outraged by Fred's complete lack of morals still make me snicker even though I can pretty much recite the entire movie by memory. Luckily, Ben and Fred's opposing natures make them a good team.

It's hard to describe, but the movie seems packed with events even though not much is happening in it. There's a trio of goons who want to rob a bank with Johnny's help, but it kind of pales to the impending peril of Johnny Five's military overlords in the prequel. Johnny's trials are a LOT more personal in this one, however; his ambush by axe-wielding thugs is outlandishly brutal and arguably out of place in an otherwise PG-rated movie (big warning there). Mingled with the attack is a real sense of betrayal, too, as Johnny's naivete leads him to trust a truly vile individual.

I saw this movie before Short Circuit 1, and it didn't hamper my enjoyment at all. Go. Watch. NAO.
