Plot: Written by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, Adam's Rib is a peerless comedy predicated on the double standard. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play Adam and Amanda Bonner, a husband-and-wife attorney team, both drawn to a case of attempted murder. The defendant (Judy Holliday) had tearfully attempted to shoot her husband (Tom Ewell) and his mistress (Jean Hagen). Adam argues that the case is open and shut, but Amanda points out that, if the defendant were a man, he'd be set free on the basis of the unwritten law. Thus it is that Adam works on behalf of the prosecution, while Amanda defends the accused woman. The trial turns into a media circus, while the Bonners' home life suffers. Adam's Rib represented the film debuts of New York-based actors Jean Hagen, Tom Ewell, and David Wayne (as Hepburn's erstwhile songwriting suitor), and the return to Hollywood of Judy Holliday after her Born Yesterday triumph. One of the best of the Tracy-Hepburn efforts, it inspired a brief 1973 TV series starring Ken Howard and Blythe Danner. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This movie is a very funny classic. It makes a great addition to my DVD collection. I received the movie in great condition and in a short time period.
Love ordering from Amazon.

Huuray for feminist Katherine Hepburn!

This is a neat and still relevant classic movie featuring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as opposing counsel in an assault case involving a wife who shot at her husband and his lover. Of course, everyone side's with the wife! That is nowadays. However, such was not always the case. And Katherine Hepburn does an excellent job of pleading the case for women's equality under the law. I loved every minute of it! She looks stunning in this movie. And steals the show!

This classic movie like most of them is a must have! Very funny! Kathrine is bound and determined to make a point how people view the sexes differently. Spencer in the end teaches her a lesson. Very entertaining movie. Together Spencer Tracy and Kathrine Hepburn leave you wanting to see more of them. Not like a lot of the movies they make today meaningless an not worth the time.

Just Too Great Comedy!

I love this movie. I've seen more time than I can count and still have a great time with it. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn follow up their comedy Woman of the Year with another great movie. Both husband and wife are lawyers and they come upon a case where a woman shoots a man who was cheating on her. The wife is played by Judy Holliday and the other woman is Jean Hagen from "Singin' In The Rain. The entire cast is wonderful and the writing is superb. It was written by Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon at the height of their careers. Just a wonderful movie and you'll love it. It's so fun!

Average Film, Mediocre DVD!
Added 4/17/2008

This was billed as a comedy but most of the jokes don't age well at all. They belong in the "may raise a smile here and there" category but you'll rarely find yourself capable of raising even a polite laugh throughout. The only "joke" that I thought was good was when Kip tells Amanda that lawyers should never marry lawyers because it eventually leads to more lawyers. Otherwise, it's just another one of the arguments for equality of the sexes which I found boring and barely entertaining. I you want to find a good film with both Hepburn and Tracy doing an excellent acting job together you'll have to look for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" which ironically happens to be Tracy's last film. As for this film, it doesn't age well and I found myself impatiently waiting for it to end.

To make things worse, this DVD version hasn't been restored and so picture imperfections abound throughout the film where we frequently get an irritating black circle that keeps popping up around the top right hand corner of the screen in addition the the white spots everywhere else. The sound quality is very, very poor as well and coupled with no Special Features worth talking about as well makes this a poor value proposition indeed.

If you are a die-hard Hepburn/Tracy fan and still want to get this farce then I would recommend waiting for a much better restored version to surface. As it is here, I wouldn't recommend this DVD as worthy of being a coaster for your coffee cup.

Not recommended!
