Plot: Director Oliver Stone once again offers a powerful and provocative story based on real-life events in this drama. Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and William J. Jimeno (Michael Peña) were two officers assigned to New York City's Port Authority who were working their beats on a quiet day in early fall when they received an emergency call. The day was September 11, 2001, and McLoughlin and Jimeno were among the policemen who attempted to evacuate the World Trade Center towers after they were struck by airliners piloted by terrorists. Both McLoughlin and Jimeno were inside the fifth building of the World Trade Center when the towers fell, and were two of the last people found alive amidst the wreckage. As McLoughlin and Jimeno struggled to hold on to their lives as rescuers sifted through the rubble, their spouses -- Donna McLoughlin (Maria Bello) and Allison Jimeno (Maggie Gyllenhaal) -- clung to the desperate hope that their husbands would survive and be found. As the McLoughlin and Jimeno families waited for word on the fate of the two men, they watched as a city and a nation came together with strength and compassion in the face of a tragedy. World Trade Center was based on the true story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, both of whom cooperated with producers in the making of this film. Producer Debra Hill died during production -- hence the posthumous credit. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A dramatic piece of one of America's horrific moments

Oliver Stone's 'World Trade Center" grabs your attention from start to finish. The movie depicted the most horrendous day in this country's history. The heroes in this movie are the officers who courageously survived the rubble and how their families coped through it all. I will admit this movie is emotional and quite powerful. We will never forget 9/11. I know I won't forget it.

Solid if unambitious

The Bottom Line:

A much different film than many people feared it would be when they heard Oliver Stone was attached, World Trade Center is not great in scope or ambition but in telling the small story of John McLoughlin and Will Jimeno it is an unqualified success; 25 years from now when there have been many more films made about 9/11 this one may not be well-remembered, but it achieves what it sets out to do.

This is an awesome movie. I recommend it. This movie is made even better if seen in high definition. I gotta say I love the HD revolution. It's almost as good as being in a theater.

Unrealistic, shallow and horribly scripted....

Oliver Stone being an iconic director, I figured this will be a winner. How wrong could I have been. pretty much the whole film revolves around the rescue of a couple of firemen AFTER the collapse of the towers.

I actually think it insults the firemen that died that day. When you watch real footage of the whole tragedy, police and rescue workers are panicking, running around with equipment to help the injured. Not in this film. They seem rather content, and when walking through the first tower to fetch oxygen tanks, they chat away without a care in the world ie. What you having for tea tonight? And, when they realise the tower is collapsing, they stand still for about 20 seocnds before making way for the rubble. Come on Oliver! What a mess.

The script is terrible. Thats all that has to be said.

As for the highlight of the movie? The shot of the first plane hitting the tower is shown threw a shadow of it upon the streets below. It last for 3 seconds in all. Wow. Oliver stone is a genius.

WATCH UNITED 93. Its much more heart pounding then this caper.
