Plot: This comic interpretation of Alexandre Dumas's classic adventure saga picks up where 1974's The Three Musketeers left off, as D'Artagnan (Michael York), Athos (Oliver Reed), Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), and Porthos (Frank Finlay) scuttle the plans of Lady de Winter (Faye Dunaway) to remove Queen Anne (Geraldine Chaplin) from the seat of power. De Winter is determined to get revenge against the Musketeers, and when she learns that D'Artagnan is infatuated with the lovely Constance (Raquel Welch), she first tries to foil their romance by seducing D'Artagnan herself, and then by persuading Rochefort (Christopher Lee) to kidnap Constance. She then engineers the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham (Simon Ward), a close friend of D'Artagnan; when word of the Duke's death and Constance's imprisonment reaches D'Artagnan and his comrades, the foursome ride off to rescue the fair lady and see that justice is done against de Winter. The Four Musketeers was filmed concurrently with The Three Musketeers; it was originally intended to be one film, but when director Richard Lester realized the movie would be over three and a half hours long, the decision was made to release it as two separate features instead. This led to lawsuits filed by several of the stars, claiming that they were hired under false pretenses and entitled to be paid for making two films rather than one. The actors won their case, but their settlement was significantly less than the salary they hoped to receive. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Many years ago I had seen these 2 films,(now in one DVD).
I had forgotten many parts of it, but it is the version that most adjusts to the original plot of the novel written by Alexandre Dumás, although it is done in a funny, satyrical way.
We had lots of fun seeing it again.

The Definitive Three Musketeers!!!

This is a great movie series! Despite the slapstick, the film sticks very close to the original material. The swordfights are incredible - no sped up wizardly or silly prancing about. It's tough and gritty with the slapstick actually giving the fights a grim humor of the slip-ups which could occur in real situations.

All the actors are superb - Oliver Reed very much fits the role of Athos on and off screen, Michael York is excellent as the dashing but bumbling country bumpkin turned hero, Finlay and Chamberlain play off each other well thru-out the films with their banter, Charleston Heston as the scheming Cardinal Richelieu an odd but very effective choice, Faye Dunaway as one of film's scariest assassin femme fatale, Raquel Welch as the goodnatured but clumsy Constance, and Christopher Lee as the villainous Rochefort - older than the musketeers but more than their match. There's also Spike Milligan whose hilarious as the innkeeper and Roy Kinnear as York's hapless porter.

The DVD extras are bit thinner than one would like such as no subtitles only captions but you get a 25 minute saga on both DVDs with interviews of Lee, York, Welch, producer Salkind, Heston, and two others. You learn how real the stunts and sword fights were and the cuts and bruises the actors incurred. Heston recounts a great line of the historical Richelieu which director Lester when told of it by Heston insisted that the line be put into the film.

Heston's Richelieu I feel is one of the best representations of the character because he didn't go in for chewing the scenery as Tim Curry's character does in the 1993 version. His Richelieu was not so much an evil villain but a true politician who you believe honestly wanted to help France - in his own way, of course. I know some dislike Heston for his other scene-chewing roles and his later NRA stance but here he gives an excellent performance of a dynamic, complex character who dominates everyone and everything with a quiet but powerful presence.

If you like adventure and action, get this DVD today! You won't be disappointed!

Review for the first disc; The Three Musketeers: This is really a fun romp, complete with all the swashbuckling sword play you'd want. It is very funny and uses slapstick comedy routines thru out! Almost Charlie Chaplin in effect!! It takes you by surprise at all the antics the Musketeers and supporting players go thru. Raquel Welsh got a Golden Glode for her performance, and I'd have to say its the best thing I've ever seen her in! Christopher Lee is a treat to watch too, as now we know him from the Star Wars movies, its cool to see his sword play from years earlier!

The transfers for both DVD's are very good and look great! The DVD packaging is very nice looking too, with embossed images on the front cover. Good assortment of extras as well, on both disc's!

Review for second disc. The Four Musketeers: Even though the filming was all done at the same time, and the original idea was to have one long movie, it was separated into 2 movies and the second is subpar to the first! Perhaps if edited as one whole film it may have been better!

Still, it has allot going for it, but gone is allot of the comedy that made the first so enjoyable. And also, the music has changed because a different composer was used and one can tell the inferior quality in his efforts! Michel Legrand was the original composer and I'm guessing the producers didn't want to ante up the money to re-use his score in the second feature; just my guess!
But the second movie completes the whole & brings it full circle to the ending Dumas had written! So, don't let my opinion of #2 detour you from buying this great 2 movie set!
Because, it is "FUN FOR ALL AND ALL FOR FUN!" Enjoy!
