Great movie but poor DVD picture does not do it justice

One of the things that makes this movie great is its exceptionally clear and well-framed cinematography. Unfortunately, the color on this DVD is not nearly as spectacular as in the theater. In addition, in some scenes it is obvious that the film has been cropped. This is a movie that cries out to be remastered and reissued in Blu Ray.

Enchanting movie

I own both the Black Stallion Returns & The Young Black Stallion yet I couldnt find the orignal movie until I found it here and its still the most moving movie I have ever seen in my life with the Black starting out as a distant horse yet Alec Ramesy saves him cutting him loose from the bridle holds and ropes then the stallion does the same when a cobra snake almost attacks Alec. In which sums it up to going back to the real world after being lost at sea for quite a long time but that doesnt stop Alec playing with his stallion friend on the beach running around and such along with that gaining his trust as well in which Alec meets back in the real world a retired jockey played by none other than Mickey Rooney who entices Alec to enter a race with the Black to race against two other horses but i m not gonna spoil the rest of the movie for you yet if you are a horse lover this movie should be in your collection i know it completed mine for sure.

Visually Stunning - A Terrific Movie for the Whole Family

For families looking for wholesome movies the entire family can view, "The Black Stallion" must rank high on anyone's list. This is a visually stunning, exquisitely filmed, superbly acted movie that will capture the imagination of viewers of all ages.
A shipwreck of the coast of North Africa strands a young boy, Alec, (Kelly Reno), and a magnificently powerful Black Stallion on a deserted island. The two then are forced by circumstances to form a friendship that enables them to survive until rescue comes. The scenes on the deserted island are absolutely beautiful and memorable. The landscapes are so beautifully filmed and directed it would be pure bliss to see this film on the big screen again!!! Even on the small screen, these are visuals you will not forget.
Once back in his home and with his somewhat bewildered and mourning mother (Teri Garr), Alec is given a hero's parade and the Black Stallion has a temporary home in Alec's backyard, that is, until he spooks from a car and runs away. Alec desperately chases after him but loses him in the night. As chance would have it, "The Black" ends up in the barnstall of Henry Dailey (played to Academy Award nomination perfection by Mickey Rooney), a retired racehorse jockey.
Alec and Henry end up fast friends, and the two enter "The Black" in a race to determine the fastest horse in the world. Henry trains young Alec to jockey The Black, and with Alec literally hanging on for dear life, The Black and he conclude the movie with a dramatic, exciting race that will bring you out of your seat cheering for the unlikely duo.
You cannot go wrong with this movie; this is family entertainment at its best. 5+ stars!

A terrific film in desperate need of a first rate DVD/Blu-ray transfer

'The Black Stallion' (executive producer Francis Ford Coppola) is one of the most underrated films of the last three decades and remains one of the best family pictures ever made. I first saw the movie when I was a kid and bought the DVD when it came available in 1998 but after upgrading to a Hi-Def TV last year (and recently Blu-ray) it became all too obvious that this transfer does not do the film justice. Compared to other DVDs in my collection the picture is simply sub-par as viewed on my 50" plasma (via an up-converting player) and the 2.0 Dolby surround track lacks clarity and depth. Not to mention that there are no extras of any kind (documentary, voice over tracks, etc.) included in the DVD.
A movie of this caliber deserves a first rate re-master to DVD/Blu-ray and with plenty of examples of high-quality transfers of films from the late '70s and early '80s there is no reason a wonderful film like 'The Black Stallion' can't be re-introduced to a new generation via the wonderful Blu-ray format. Come on Criterion get off your butts!

Hi, Yo, Black Stallion!!

there are few films that never get old, that have a universal appeal; this is one of the best. the locations, cinematography and acting (both human and equine)are first rate. i watched this film 30 years ago with my children; i watched this film last week with my grandchildren. i have no doubt that they will all be watching it with their grandchildren.
