Plot: Like the TV series that shared the same title, The Untouchables (1987) was an account of the battle between gangster Al Capone and lawman Eliot Ness, this time in the form of a feature film boasting big stars, a big budget, and a script from respected playwright David Mamet. Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing. All of the credits for The Untouchables boasted big names, including music from Ennio Morricone and costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his tradition of including a homage to past masters of the cinema with a taut stairway shoot-out reminiscent of a similar sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Better than the TV series
Added 11/15/2009

Expecting the The Untouchables to be a bad remake of the TV series, I was reluctant to view it. In my opinion, the movie version outshines its predecessor. Connery brings out the best in Costner, Smith, and Garcia. With Connery and De Niro's characterizations, the movie transcends the black-and-white series (on my childhood set)that deals with black-and-white issues.

A fun gangster movie

Sean Connery? A career performance.

Andy Garcia? A glimpse of a great young actor.

Robert De Niro? A huge impact in just a few scenes.

Kevin Costner? Actually, not bad.

GRAND "HOLLYWOOD" ENTERTAINMENT!

I just had to blow the dust off of this one as it had been many years since my last viewing. I have always been a sucker for good mob movies and, The Untouchable, is no exception, but this is a film that runs hot and cold for me. For the most part it is very entertaining, but it sometimes feels like a cartoon. After watching the extras on this special edition, I did get some insight to why this probably happened as De Palma had a few flops and was looking for a box office winner! The film's tone is uneven as one minute we view someone getting their head bashed in with a baseball bat and then some of the gun battles seem to have our heroes and bad guys using rubber bullets.

I may be nitpicking here as it is a very entertaining film that is successful more often than not. The cast is very good and the direction is tight, so if you're in the mood for good old fashioned cops and robbers fair 'The Untouchables' is hard to beat. The DVD special edition holds up well with a very good transfer and plenty of extras.

Great movie

The movie was great and so was the cast.Robert De Niro nailed the role as Al Capone perfectly.Sean Connery, great.I read the responses from fans of the scene in the church."If he pulls a knife you pull a gun.He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue."A great movie line. The shootout scene at the train station was great and Ness exposing corruption at all levels of the justice. The trailer of the movie is what drew me in.Kevin Costner was the right choice for the role as Eliot Ness and I want a sequel.
