Plot: Actor-turned-director and producer Griffin Dunne (Practical Magic, Addicted to Love) teams up with scenarist Dirk Wittenborn for the slice-of-life ensemble drama Fierce People. As summer encroaches, 16-year-old Manhattanite Finn Earl (Anton Yelchin) would love nothing more than to trek off to South America and spend the year's sun-drenched months near the equator, embarking on thrilling adventures with his estranged archaeologist father, whom he's never met. Alas, the bonds of family rein in tight when Finn's booze- and coke-addled mother, the masseuse Liz (Diane Lane), cries out for help -- and, in the process, unwittingly gets Finn arrested. In a dramatic attempt to reverse circumstances and sort out the complications in both of their lives, Liz insists on taking custody of Finn for the summer. Both, she insists, will live in the home of one of her former massage clients, the aging billionaire Ogden C. Osborne (Donald Sutherland) -- with whom she may be amorously involved. Though Finn agrees begrudgingly at first, in time he finds the environment welcoming -- as he develops a crush on Ogden's gorgeous granddaughter (Kristen Stewart) and befriends Ogden's grandson. But when an unforeseen and shocking act of violence erupts, it estranges Finn and Liz from their posh surroundings and provides a sobering, harrowing reminder of the socioeconomic differences between the Earls and their new friends. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Wonderful Story of Tough Times
Added 10/5/2009

I had forgotten that I had watched this movie, but with Amazon's suggestion for me to purchase it, I remembered how much I really loved "In the Land of Women".

It's about young man Carter (Adam Brody who gives an awesome performance) who moves from LA to Michigan to live with his funny and loveable Grandmother. While he is dealing with change of scenery and helping Grandma survive, he meets across the street neighbors Lucy, Paige and Sarah(Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Vega and thier mom Meg Ryan). He helps them deal with their emotional trauma and Sarah's life threatening disease which is tearing apart her family (including her confused and distraught husband).

This is another amazing and fulfilling performance from Meg Ryan- as well as Kristen Stewart does a tremendous job of being the troubled, but struggling to understand teenager.

It's about dealing with trauma, learning to move on, learning who you are, what you can take, who can deal and who can't. It is a really wonderful story and so well worth the watch. Tear jerker at times, laugh reel at times... I am very impressed with it.

Great movie. The grandmother makes it worth watching. I enjoyed all the characters and what they brought to the movie. It made me laugh, cry and think about what it would really feel like to be any of them. Enjoy!

Pretty good

I love this movie. It's really good and the audience grows to care about the characters. The only problem I had with it was the lack of bonus features. Bonus features are the thing I look forward to most in a DVD, especially if I've already seen the movie. Sadly, this DVD didn't have ANY extras, but was still worth the purchase. All the actors are great in this movie.

Not Very Pleased

The product looked boot-legged. The covering to the product looked like it was printed off the computer. I guess with paying only about $2 for it, I cannot complain. I just wish that it was the original covering and disk.

This movie is not for everybody, no. But I thought the actors, the acting, the plot, the direction; I thought it was all very good, and I very much loved this movie. It's definitely worth the watch, if you have the time.

Great movie

I saw this movie mainly for Chris Evans, who is shocking as the bad guy that you wouldn't expect. But also it provides great insight into the lives of natives in another land and how we can feel the same way when we enter an environment different form our own. I recommend it if you want to lose yourself in a rather small movie with a big message.

This film fails to live up to its potential. In the beginning, you see a vivid portrait of a life unravelling in addiction and emotional neglect. The son, Finn, was planing to work with his father (whose only contact with him is through the films he made) in the Amazon rain forest, with the "fierce people" of the title. Unfortunately, while scoring coke for his mom, he is busted and cannot go. This is a shock to his mother, who decides to turn her life around and become a better mother.

They wind up, improbably, in the massive estate of Osborne, many of whose children and grandchildren have the run of his 10-mile square New Jersey estate. Beyond the mother's sobering up and quitting coke, played wonderfully by Lane, there are some very interesting subplots: Finn develops a wonderfully believable relationship with Osborne, who mentors him in some vital life lessons. Sutherland was never better, as a quirky and warm man who cares and yet is also very tough. Ruler of the roost, he hopes to create a better world somehow, in his private kingdom. Finn also studies his father's films, which provide a wonderful sub-narrative to his observations of the huge family culture he is observing. Finally, he mingles with the locals and to a degree is accepted by them, though remains fully aware that he can never be one of them.

Unfortunately, the film unravels with Finn's relationships with Osborne's grandchildren. He finds a beautiful, sensitive girl of course, and their path is ridiculously predictable, if occasionally poignant. While Kristen Stewart succeeds in evoking some of the psychological trouble that underlies her character, the character is essentially a cute stick figure. Finn also becomes friends with the outgoing though mysterious grandson, whose evolution is also a bit far fetched and laughably melodramatic. Then the plot thickens in a ruinous direction, which I do not want to spoil for others, and ends sentimentally if tragically. If the film had ended 2/3 of the way through, it would easily have gotten 5 stars.

Recommended with these caveats. The acting in my viewing is far better than average, but the script in the end is weak.
