Plot: Francis Ford Coppola protégé Phillip Borsos directs this elegiac, low-key tale about real-life bandit Bill Miner that has become a classic of Canadian cinema. Having been released from jail in 1901 following a 33-year prison sentence for robbing stagecoaches, Bill Miner (Richard Farnsworth) finds himself living in a society that has completely changed from the one of his youth. He tries to put his life of crime behind him and settle down in Washington state with his sister, but the quiet life does not suit him. He feels restless but uncertain as to how to proceed next. The answer comes to him when he sees Edward S. Porter's The Great Train Robbery. Soon, Miner has slipped over the border into Canada and, along with his new partner, Shorty (Wayne Robson), robs the Canadian Pacific Railway Transcontinental Express. Later, while laying low after the crime in a remote corner of British Columbia, he meets the beautiful, strong-willed photographer Kate Flynn (Jackie Burroughs). In writing this script, Borsos reportedly made heavy use of contemporary court documents and testimonies. This film was screened at the {~2001 Toronto Film Festival} in honor of its 20th anniversary. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

This movie is based on a true story. Farnsworth does a great job. Very believable. The type movie that they don't make anymore.

I have been wanting to own this movie for quite some time and the movie is a really good one. The copy which I received is in poor condition and doesn't play cleanly. For that, I am dissatisfied.

Whither DVD?

Many before me have praised this splendid little film, so I don't need to add my words to theirs. However, I want to add my voice to those who wonder why on earth The Grey Fox is still not available on DVD. I feel fortunate to have a decent VHS copy and a good VHS player so I can watch this fine film on occasion, but neither item will last forever.

I look forward to the day when Amazon tells us the gentleman bandit has escaped again, but this time onto DVD. Bill Miner and his portrayer, the wonderful character actor Richard Farnsworth (R.I.P.), need to be recaptured by new admirers. Hello, Francis Ford Coppola and Zeotrope?

not enough pressure on the studio to release

This is a travesty! This movie should be re-mastered into dvd format for future generations to enjoy. How long are they going to wait! The fans of Richard Farnsworth are tired of waiting for this beautiful film to be released from the bondage of Hollywood legalism. I'm beginning to think it will take an act of God to get it done!

At last, I can replace my bootleg copy

Cannot wait for this movie to be released in DVD format. My VHS tape arrived quickly and in good order. This is a great story about making ends meet and following your bliss. Richard Farnsworth plays a character that reminds me so of my own kin.
