Plot: By the time Sergio Leone made this film, Italians had already produced about 20 films ironically labelled spaghetti westerns. Leone approached the genre with great love and humor. Although the plot was admittedly borrowed from Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), Leone managed to create a work of his own that would serve as a model for many films to come. Clint Eastwood plays a cynical gunfighter who comes to a small border town and offers his services to two rivaling gangs. Neither gang is aware of his double play, and each thinks it is using him, but the stranger will outwit them both. The picture was the first installment in a cycle commonly known as the Dollars trilogy. Later, United Artists, who distributed it in the U.S., coined another term for it: the Man With No Name trilogy. While not as impressive as its follow-ups For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), A Fistful of Dollars contains all of Leone's eventual trademarks: taciturn characters, precise framing, extreme close-ups, and the haunting music of Ennio Morricone. Not released in the U.S. until 1967 due to copyright problems, the film was decisive in both Clint Eastwood's career and the recognition of the Italian western. ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide

LEONE'S REVAMP OF THE WESTERN
Added 3/3/2009

Sergio Leone pretty much re-invented the western with A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, and in the process breathed new life into a near-dead genre, and Eastwood made a squint-eyed, taciturn anti-hero into an icon. The highly ritualized gunfights, and violence are as orchestrated as any ballet, and are set to an unforgettable Ennio Morricone score. A must have for Eastwood, or western fans.

One of my favorite westerns. A timeless classic

Excellent movie. Lots of shooting. Clint Eastwood makes his debut of "The Man With No Name". Although most people credit "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" as being the best film out of the trilogy, I disagree. This film has a lot more action (don't get me wrong, The Good The Bad, And The Ugly was also an excellent movie). Along with Open Range, this is my favorite western. A Fistful Of Dollars is a must for any western fan.

The Bottom Line:

A clever updating of Yojimbo, "Fistful" sometimes reveals its low-budget origins but is certainly worth a look for anyone who enjoys westerns.

Just Another Spaghetti Western...
Added 11/24/2008

If you have already watched Sergio Leone's other western movies like 'For a Few Dollars More' or 'Once Upon A Time In The West', you better avoid this one. Sheer repeat. Only unique feature is Ennio Morricone's music. Rest, just another western movie based on a small town of a single road. Setting is not that ambitious in this one.
Eastwood is also all the same - not able to escape the sheer monotonous look of the other western movies of Leone. He does not look to have even a clear agenda in this edition!

For a fresher, this is a try, but not before the couple of movies mentioned above.

Classic movies

These are some nice classic movies to watch. There are limited features on the DVD, but that is to be expected based on the age of the movies.

this is a great box set to own for all western lovers. each movie is even better than the last. even though the movies are long the talking parts are fun to watch and are just as note worthy as the gun slinging a** kicken parts :)

How do you spell Spaghetti?

If you love his other westerns, you should love these too. I've been a fan of Clint's westerns for a long time and got tired of waiting for the tv stations to decide to play them. I think the price has even went down since I ordered this set. I'm not a film critic but I know what I like. These movies are classics and I love to watch them.
