Plot: Out of Africa is drawn from the life and writings of Danish author Isak Dinesen, who during the time that the film's events occured was known by her married name, Karen Blixen-Flecke. For convenience's sake, Karen (Meryl Streep) has married Baron Bor Blixen-Flecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer). In 1914, the Baron moves himself and his wife to a plantation in Nairobi, then leaves Karen to her own devices as he returns to his womanizing and drinking. Soon, Karen has fallen in love with charming white hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford), who prefers a no-strings relationship. A woman who prides herself on her independence, Blixen finds herself unhappily in thrall to a aloof man -- and doubly unhappy for living out such a cliché situation. Although Redford received a lion's share of criticism for his too-American performance, Streep has rarely been better, and the film's perfectly measured pace is offset by David Watkin's stunning location photography. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 7, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Adapted Screenplay for Kurt Luedtke, and Best Cinematography for Watkin. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"One Of My Favorites!"
Added 11/15/2009

"Out Of Africa" has always been one of my all-time favorite films. Rarely has a movie excelled in all components of the cinema, everything from the acting to the direction to the story. Meryl Streep plays a woman named Karen Blixen who marrys a philandering man in Kenya. Soon, Karen falls in love with both the land and a white hunter, played by Robert Redford. The movie depicts Karen's story on running a coffee plantation, the problems she encounters in running her business, and her love affair with this mysterious man who has stolen her heart. "Out Of Africa", based on a true story, swept the 1985 Academy Awards, winning for Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction, and Sound. The music to the film is one of the most haunting in film history and adds to the intense drama. Roger Ebert says, "Out Of Africa" is one of the great epic romances". The special edition DVD comes with commentary by Pollack, an original documentary entitled "Song Of Africa", the trailer, and production notes. The film is 2 hours and 41 minutes, and the sound is 4.1. Simply, a perfect movie.

BEWARE "anamorphic" pseudo-widescreen (FAKE)
Added 11/8/2009

"Anamorphic" widescreen? When is a widescreen movie not a widescreen movie? When it's anamorphic, which is a phony, useless imitation of genuine widescreen. If I had realized the phony nature of this print of OoA, I never would have purchased it.

The Song of Africa documentary was OK, though.

DON'T BUY this DVD if you're looking for an image like the one you saw in the theater. You will be as disappointed as I am, which is REALLY disappointed.

Best African movie ever made. Great cinematography. Good actors, good story. I don't like love stories, but this is an exception. Get the DVD.
