Plot: A mother and daughter flee to a strange abandoned town to seek out answers to the daughter's nightly psychological turmoil in Brotherhood of the Wolf director Christophe Gans' adaptation of the popular survival horror video game. Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) is a very sick child, yet rather than seeing her child suffer the cruel indignities of the medical profession, Rose (Radha Mitchell) ignores her husband's (Sean Bean) pleas and absconds with her ailing daughter to the fog-enshrouded town of Silent Hill. A town drenched in darkness and inhabited by a strange collection of menacing specters, Silent Hill seemingly swallows young Sharon whole upon arrival. Determined to get her daughter back at any cost, Rose sets out to explore the mysterious Silent Hill, only to discover an evil so powerful that it possesses the ability to transform anything it wishes. With the deeply disturbing history of the town slowly coming into focus through the dense fog, Rose soon realizes that both she and her daughter may be little more than simple pawns in a much larger, and seemingly supernatural, game. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

dark side of mankind

An excellent portrayal of how people can be terrorized into committing horrible crimes. Being an atheist I often wondered what it would be like to be branded as a heretic and burned alive at the stake by the church like what has happened throughout history. I wonder no more -- This movie did an excellent job of portraying just that. One might counter "we don't burn people at the stake anymore and beside this was only a movie -- this is the 21st century. WRONG. In 1952 a man was burned at the stake in Spain. Also a pacifist I again wonder how one could forgive a church who did things like this to their children. There seems to be no limit to the cruelty portrayed in this movie and its parallel to real life. It reminds me of the brazen bull; a device used during the beginning of the Christian era in which whole families including children were placed inside and roasted to death. I would like to believe these are isolated incidents and this sort of rare event could not happen to me or another person who disagrees with a church or religion. But then who wants to be part of a rare event that ends their life by being burned to death.

My new favorite movie, Welcome To Silent Hill
Added 10/28/2009

First off, let me just say I am pretty new to Silent Hill. I've beaten Silent Hill 2 and 5 over the year, plus I've tried SH 1 & 4.

I just recently watched this movie from beginning to end and was astounded! (I hadn't seen the whole movie when it first came out, only about 30 minutes.) Anyway, you don't need a Blu-Ray to appreciate the beauty of this film but you do need a home-theater to truly get the feeling! The ambience was very well accomplished, it felt alot like the games, this movie stayed true to the gamers & did not try to attract some brainless hollywood fanbase which probably couldn't even understand the movie anyway. I was surprised that this movie was actually a good game adaptation! Most of it's imitators failed miserably: Doom, Resident Evil, were there any others? I believe the reason it was so accomplished is thanks to Cristophe Gans who, if you watch the special features you will see is a true Silent Hill fan. However don't be fooled, this movie packs some mind-blowing special effects. It is a big budget film. The story is beautifully put together, not too confusing nor too revealing, just perfect. The imagery is dazzling, the colors, the details in the environment, everything was perfect in my opinion. The soundtrack stayed true to it's origins which is great. My only complaint was that Room Of Angel was not in the movie, too bad. Not a big problem though, this movie still falls into my all-time favorite movies category. If you are a fan of the games, well you've probably already seen it but for those of you who know nothing about the games, I think you could actually become a fan. This movie deserves at least a rental, if you're the least bit open-minded and not restricted by gore and action boundaries, you will enjoy this movie.

Blu Ray Version Not the best HD Version
Added 9/18/2009

Silent Hill is without a Doubt one of the Best/Coolest Video Game Adaptions to Date
Looks so Good and the story is Scary and works in The Silent Hill Universe

The BR Version is on the Other Hand a Bit off a so/so Transfer
It's good at times sometimes Stunning But, Could be so Much more in 180i/180p PQ

If you happen 2 be a Complete NUT like me and have Both HD Players (BR-Player & HD DVD Player)
Find the German HD DVD Import of Silent Hill
It's a much better and True to Hi Def Transfer

If u only have a BR Player I'd hold out on it
Until There is a 2nd Print BR Version with a Complete Crisp Transfer with More Special Features

The Movie is 9.6/10
The Blu Ray Transfer 8.5/10

Great Adaptation
Added 7/26/2009

If you enjoyed playing Silent Hill back in the day, you WILL enjoy this movie. It's been almost a decade since I played they game, but this movie brought back some fun memories. Like the game it's based on, it's atmospheric, gory, and tense. I avoided it because of the bad critical reviews, but I don't think they approached this one from the right angle. This is a superior adaptation of a video game. If you haven't played the game, the Ring-like plot may seem hakneyed.

Awesome CG and Nice Story
Added 6/29/2009

I don't understand why critiques such as those from rotten tomatoes gave this movie such a bad review.

Honestly, this movie has some of the best CG scenes I've seen. The story is not as mysterious as Silent Hill 1-3 games, but will still make you wonder what the hell is happening and in the end will explain events in a very satisfactory way. Plus, they have chosen a pretty good actor for central character, Radha Mitchell.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, FANS OF PYRMIDHEADS, this is a MUST SEE for you guys.

I think all this movie requires is some PATIENCE which most of the audience these days don't have. And while it is not one of the best horrors I have seen. It definitely has good deal of horror component to it. Even if you don't buy it, PLEASE at least rent it and give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

The Janitor's out to bug you!
Added 9/24/2009

Silent Hill is one of the most visually stunning films I've seen. It is simply mesmerising to look at. The atmosphere is wonderfully dark, dingy, weird and creepy. A dreamlike (or more accurately a nightmare-like) serenity shrouds the deserted town, while just below the surface a terrible darkness lurks. The monsters encountered are truly disturbing, especially the Janitor, and the design of these creatures demonstrates the high level of creativity that has been lavished on the visuals. The effects are top-notch; you will never look at peeling paint in the same way again. Five stars so far, then, no question about it. So it's a real shame that the script lets the production design down. Up until the third act the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the little girl is deeply satisfying in its spookiness. Silent Hill is such a strange place you want the reason for all this suffering and evil to be equally unexpected and bizarre. Instead we learn, during a very long piece of exposition, that the town's terrible past is in fact a rather predictable, and disappointing one. Suddenly the eerie atmosphere is destroyed and the film becomes derivative. Even the spectacular finale can't recapture the mystery that the first two-thirds of the film so effectively created. Anyone who enjoys the work of David Lynch will know that weirdness can be used to great effect and doesn't always have to be completely explained away. If Silent Hill had left more to the imagination of the viewer it would have been a much better movie.

Well
Added 8/26/2009

While Silent Hill isn't my favorite horror movie, I love the concept and it's good enough to watch again once in a while.

It looks like a sequel is slated to come out in 2010, which is good, because I think it's ripe for more stories on this theme, much like with the video game.
