Plot: A beautiful woman discovers a new side of her personality in this erotic drama. Kansas-born Emily Reed (Carré Otis) is an intelligent but naive young woman who has made a name for herself as a lawyer and is hired to work with businesswoman Claudia Lirones (Jacqueline Bisset), who is putting the finishing touches on a major real estate deal. Claudia brings Emily with her as she jets off to Rio De Janeiro to wrap up the sale of a resort hotel to the Chinese. When Claudia is unexpectedly called away, Emily is left in the care of James Wheeler (Mickey Rourke), an expatriate American multi-millionaire with a truly remarkable tan who is in on Claudia's deal. The Carnivale is in full swing in Rio, and James seeks to broaden Emily's horizons by introducing her to the sensual pleasures lurking all around her; James and Emily soon become involved, which complicates matters when Claudia returns. One of Wild Orchid's love scenes between Mickey Rourke and Carré Otis had to be trimmed so that the film could gain an R rating for American release (the uncut version was later released on home video); a widely circulated rumor had it that Rourke and Otis, who were living together at the time, had actually had sex while the scene was filmed, though Otis later denied it. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A very mixed bag

This movie garnered a lot of negative reviews. Despite all the eye candy, nudity, and the occasional carnal relation, one reviewer said that Wild Orchid "...wilts, flaccid, on the stem." LOL.

Well, a great move it's not, but there is certainly no dearth of voyeuristic pleasures to be had, either. The plot is pretty thin gruel, and the characters aren't very credible, either, but it's obvious that's not the point of the movie. Set against the backdrop of carnival or mardi gras time in Rio de Janeiro, there's plenty of eye candy what with all the beautiful women running around in skimpy outfits, but there's not much else of any substance in this oddball, mildly steamy movie.

As for the acting, most of it is just too affected for me, as Mickey Rourke attempts to project a persona that is both sexually aloof and decadently sophisticated at the same time, while Carre Otis, who is certainly easy to look at, seems to spend most of the movie with a look of suppressed eroticism combined with naive bewilderment on her face.

Despite all the nudity and the occasional sex scene, the movie is as much about unrequited love and desire as anything else. The two main characters, played by Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis, have intimacy issues and so spend most of their time voyeuristically watching other couples rather than getting romantically involved themselves, although in the end they finally do. So you basically have a voyeuristic movie that is about a couple of voyeurs themselves. :-)

This is a little bit too much self-reflexive voyeurism for me, but there was nothing on HBO that I hadn't seen last night and so ended up watching watching this. I give it two and a half stars because the women certainly aren't hard to look at and the several scenes with hundreds of people dancing in brilliant mardi gras costumes are actually pretty spectacular. But if you're looking for something more substantial in the way of a decadent, steamy, romantic movie like "Last Tango in Paris," this isn't it.

"Wild Orchid" is an erotic movie starring Mickey Rourke and some other people. Essentially, it's a pornographic movie, another attempt to mainstream porn. Above all, it's a *failed* attempt to mainstream porn. The movie is really bad, and can almost be considered an unintentional parody of pornography. My favourite scene is when Young Woman enters car, and finds Older Woman having sex with Man. She is distressed and asks Rourke to stop them. Rourke responds, in a voice that's supposed to be erotic and passionate: "I WANT TO, BABY. BUT I CAN'T. I JUST CAN'T".

HA HA HA HA HA.

Mickey is a really bad First Lover.

Later, the prudish Young Woman and Mickey (who both have sexual inhibitions of some kind) finally "do it". The trailer looked promising, but alas, you don't see much...

Just as well. I mean, we can't mainstream porn, now can we?

PS. I like orchids. The plants, I mean.

Wild Orchid In Deed

This is by far the most erotic movie I have ever seen you literally feel as if your there during Carnival. The movie (to me) is about two people searching for something and finding each other and the ending is perfect. I love this film and Zalman Kings vision. Beautifully done one of my favorite movies.. 5 stars..

Masterful exercise in the art of seduction
Added 5/10/2009

One star off because the Rourke character is rich, millionaire rich. Had he been middle-class or upper-middle class, the seduction would have been more impressive. Another reason one star comes off is because there is only one good scene that he is not in, but since the seduction was realistic and the acting of Rourke is once again stellar, I can't give less than four stars. The Carre Otis character (Emily) is the hardest type of woman to seduce and Zalman King knows this: she is ambitious, hard-headed, conservative, and stunningly beautiful. Surely a woman like this is going to be a task to seduce and the Rourke character knows this. This is the kind of woman that will require a lot of patience and suave. The Rourke character (Wheeler) doesn't need to say all the right things: what he says to the ambitious international lawyer is genuine and heartfelt. On the exterior he is a motorcycle-riding bad-boy. But under the surface belies a man with a vulnerable side and knows that the woman can do some emotional damage to him if he isn't careful. The Jacqueline Bisset performance as a negotiator is a treat. A pivotal scene in the movie is when she and Emily talk about Wheeler for the first time. The negotiator is busy putting on a tie and looking in the mirror (I actually appreciate this. Some movies show characters putting ties on without mirrors and it's not realistic to me because without looking at a mirror, the tie probably will end up looking sloppy and crooked.), telling her of her experience with Wheeler and how he charmed her without even touching her. She wants to know if Wheeler swept her the way he did her, Emily is a beautiful woman after all, so she wants to find out if her attraction in the past was typical or just a spell Wheeler put on her. I guess she wanted to find out if Emily IS as weak as she WAS. The scene is pretty powerful for softcore cheese, I was pleasantly surprised. The movie contains some unforgettable scenes and some not-so-unforgettable scenes. Pretty much every scene not involving Wheeler is forgettable (except for that scene I mentioned between the negotiator and Emily) but Rourke's stellar performance is enough to carry the movie. Rourke displays the proper way of seduction: patience, sincerity, and mystery (not to mention intelligence, Wheeler is no dummy). It's a very subtle yet riveting performance. It's hard to imagine anybody except Rourke as Wheeler. Rent but don't buy. B

Looking for "light" skin flick?
Added 5/8/2009

I bought this as a gift from memory or maybe from "remote" memory, hee hee. The movie and the story line makes "no" sense...really. But if you like Mickey...think he's "sexy"...than you'd probably like it. I found the second viewing asking myself what did you see in this? Actually felt embarrassed after buying. Was sorry I did so.
