Plot: Hollywood filmmaker Donald Petrie directs the comedy Welcome to Mooseport. Gene Hackman stars as former U.S. President Monroe The Eagle Cole. He's retired to the small New England town of Mooseport, ME, in order to write his memoirs and relax. The retirement is put on hold, however, when he's persuaded to run for mayor of the town. Meanwhile, local hardware store owner and plumber Handy Harrison (Ray Romano) is just the sort of plaid-shirted everyman to run against him. Cole seems a sure win in the race, especially with his loyal personal assistants (Marcia Gay Harden and Fred Savage) aiding his every move. The competition gets even more severe when Handy's sweetheart Sally (Maura Tierney) comes between the two men. Welcome to Mooseport also stars Christine Baranski and Rip Torn. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

In fact I'm not at all a Ray Romano fan, so I wasn't surprised that the love scenes just don't have any passion.
In a story where we are supposed to believe that a plumber takes on the ex-president of the USA, you just don't believe anybody except
Marcia Gay Harden who brings off her role as the presidential aid.
I really thought this was a stinker of a movie.

Delightful, light-hearted comedy-romance, set in small town America that reminds me of movies from yesteryear. Had this taped on VHS and have watched it numerous times and have ordered the DVD to replace it. It is timeless entertainment that in the end will leave you happy and cheering for all.

The Bottom Line:

Unremarkably mediocre in almost every way, Welcome to Mooseport will likely go down in history solely for the fact that it was Gene Hackman's last movie.

small town genre

9/12/08 Actors*: Romano,Hackman, Harden,Tierney,Baranski,Torn and Savage help to elevate what is considered atypical jargon and scenarios in the way small towns and its people are depicted...There are no real surprises expected on how the movie will end .The expression, there are no small parts just small actors ring true here... this cast of *strong actors* & a couple of the second bananas are able to keep the scenes from being mediocre. 9/12/08 abj
