Plot: A troubled war veteran tries to unlock his memories of a terrible crime in this stylish thriller, the first American project for British filmmaker John Maybury. In 1991, Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) was an American soldier serving in the Persian Gulf when he was shot in the head; pronounced dead by a field surgeon, Starks somehow returned to life, though with no small number of psychological problems to show for his troubles. A year later, Starks is walking through the snowy Vermont wilderness when he discovers a woman whose truck has broken down, Jean (Kelly Lynch). Starks tries to help Jean and her young daughter, and later flags down a car for a ride into town; however, the car is being driven by a criminal on the run from the police (Brad Renfro), and not long after the car is cornered by police, Starks' memory goes blank. When he comes to, Jack is accused of killing a patrolman in the violent standoff that followed, and is told the woman, her daughter, and the criminal existed only in his imagination. Declared insane in his murder trial, Starks is sentenced to a mental institution run by Dr. Becker (Kris Kristofferson), who seems to believe that the more brutal the treatment, the better. As Starks suffers frequent beatings and long spells in a frozen locker, his mind drifts from his harrowing past into the future, where he visits with Jackie (Keira Knightley), who once was the young girl Starks tried to help. The Jacket also features Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dr. Lorenson, a compassionate doctor who tries to help Starks and his fellow patients. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This movie is just waaaaay too far out for my tastes. The acting is good, but the subject matter is depressing and weird. Sorry, too weird for me!

Time After Time After...

THE JACKET is sort of an interesting blend of JACOB'S LADDER, BUTTERFLY EFFECT, and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, w/ just a pinch of THE UGLY and 12 MONKEYS tossed in for seasoning. After being mortally wounded in the gulf war, Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) finds himself in a mental institution at the mercy of Dr. Becker (Kris Kristofferson). Starks has been accused of a murder he didn't commit and found to be insane. Becker uses a banned technique in order to "break" Starks. This method is actually a form of drug-induced torture that somehow allows Jack to travel forward in time. This leads him on a terrible journey of discovery where life, death, and reality are twisted and intersected. Brody is very convincing in his role, as are Keira Knightley (The Hole), Daniel Craig (Invasion), and Jennifer Jason-Liegh (The Hitcher, Single White Female). THE JACKET is a nice little mind-melter...

a hollywood blend...

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh with only 3 stars - but i felt something needed to be said about the many flaws within this movie...
First of all this review isn't going to moan about the supposed ending or pretentiously what 'I' think happens - that is best left for personal opinion - everyone is going to view the film differently.
The main issue i had with the film is that although the idea has potential - I didn't feel that it was reached fully within this film. The theme of time-travel is one that countless films have attempted, and so the very 'safe' approach that 'the jacket' takes, gives you somewhat dejavu. The film is a blend of unoriginal ideas taken from classics such as 'one flew over the cuckoos nest', 'jacob's ladder' and 'twelve monkeys', but alas lacks in the depth that these great movies had.
Definately worth watching, but don't expect anything special...but look out for Daniel Craig's role - that is definately worth watching for!!

I liked that this was a dark "thinker" type movie. I watched this movies with no expectations, because I've never heard of it before I saw it on TV.

I like this style of movie. The script wasn't the greatest but the acting was still ok.

Once in a while a great movie will come and go...and if you are lucky
you might have a change to find it and see it years after....
The jacket is one of those movies....read the reviews and if you like
what you read, you should find a way to see this movie....It will keep
your attention with a great script and great actors/actresses//
I was very sastisfied.
