Plot: The surprise hit of the summer of 1963, Flipper is a thoroughly captivating outdoor adventure from the Ivan Tors factory. Sandy Ricks (Luke Halpin), the young son of Florida fisherman Porter Ricks (Chuck Connors), nurses a wounded dolphin back to health. His father would prefer that Sandy allow the dolphin to return to its natural habitat, but Sandy has other ideas. After Flipper rescues Sandy from a shark, however, the boy grants the dolphin his freedom. Ideally suited for audiences of all ages, Flipper was fully deserving of its success; within a year, it had spawned a theatrical sequel and a long-running TV series, which, like the film, cast Suzy the Dolphin as the hero Flipper. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Good old fashoin entertainment! Great for the entire family!

What can I say about Flipper? It's a great story and will warm your heart. Children love it and adults find themselves glued to the TV as well. Highly recommend to those who are tired of all these techno over the edge productions that really aren't suitable for the entire family. It's a classic and everyone should have this as a part of their media library.

The Introduction to the Hero of the Sea
Added 2/2/2008

Sandy Ricks (Luke Halpin) is the son of a fisherman living in the Florida Keys. When a hurricane hits their island, Porter Rick's (Chuck Connors) book is destroyed and he must head to the mainland to get it fixed.

Sandy, meanwhile, accompanies his friend Kim (Connie Scott) on a fun filled day of swimming and fishing. The day ends on a sad note when a dolphin gets hit with a spear. Even though it is badly hurt, Sandy can't stand to see it killed, so he brings it home and nurses it back to health. But what will his dad say when he returns?

This is the movie that first introduced us to Flipper. From here, he'd get another movie and his own TV show. It's interesting to see how things developed from here. Luke Halpin is the only actor to make it to the TV show. Porter Rick was recast, and his mother (yes, he has one here) was completely eliminated. Also, younger brother Bud is no where to be found here.

That aside, how does the film do as a movie? To be honest, it is okay at best. The action is rather slow. Heck, we're about half way in before Flipper even shows up. The early parts focus on the hurricane and how the community survives. Of course, it doesn't help that the story is predictable. And the acting is mediocre at best. It gets the job done, but at times it is pretty weak.

I must admit, I was disappointed with this movie. It's okay, but not nearly as special as I expected it to be.

INTERESTING FAMILY MOVIE THAT INSPIRED THE HIT TV SHOW!
Added 9/22/2007

I was a fan of the TV show and had not seen the original movie in many years. It's interesting to see how Sandy and Flipper become close friends in this nice little family movie. Chuck Conners plays 'Porter Ricks' in this film, but would be re-cast in the TV series and they would add another son. Another little gem I found in the bargain bin. The DVD transfer looks good.

Great family sunday night popcorn film.

Good clean fun. Hollywood has lost the art of film making over the last 40 years. This is an excellent step back in time for film buffs. A great and entertaining film for the whole family. The kids will go to sleep at night dreaming of sunny beaches and friendly animals after watching this, instead of wondering who will survive on "Survivor", or who's going to bomb what on "24". If your wondering what your kids should be watching it is this movie.
