Plot: Goodbye, Mr. Chips, based on James Hilton's novel, is a melodrama about a shy British teacher named Mr. Chipping (Robert Donat) who devotes his life to teaching his boys after the death of his lovely, energetic American wife Katherine (Greer Garson). Told via flashbacks, the film features an aged Mr. Chipping looking back nostalgically at his long career, taking note of the people who've touched his life over the years. Donat was the recipient of a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the title character, and the film features the debut performance of a young Garson. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

One of the finest movies ever made.

I have seen this movie so many times before and purchased my current copy to enjoy once more the remarkable acting by all the leads, particularly Robert Donat, who gave a true life to the author's story as well as a remarkable expression to those school conditions, which I personally experienced as a boy. I can only say this is one of my most favourite movies of all time.

If this great film doesn't spark some semblance of emotion in you, check your pulse. You MUST be dead, because Robert Donat is completely, thoroughly disarming. What a masterful performance, and at such a young age. And Greer Garson . . . what can I say? A temple to loveliness. What an incredible woman. This film is probably the best argument for watching older b&w classics. But for more excellent Robert check out his 'Count of Monte Cristo.' If you are impressed by Greer Garson, and by the way you're insane to be not, then be sure and check out 'Mrs. Miniver.'

I first watched this movie because I love Greer Garson. I bought it not only because of her endearing performance, but because I loved Robert Donat's potrayal of Mr. Chips. I love it!
