Fun early Judy
Added 8/8/2009
This is really two movies in one. The singing and dancing musical and the horse race comedy/drama. Both are fun and, of course, a must see for all Judy fans. I also enjoyed the dancing style of Buddy Ebsen. He glides like he has no bones!

Looks like TRASH next to the other meoldies...
Added 2/4/2007
The one star is for Judy Garland and Eleanor Powell. They try their best to hold up this mess, but alas, they do not succeed. The movie would be perfect if it was only a revue. The PLOT kills EVERYTHING. So strong that the musical numbers remain shredded underneath, gasping for mercy. Actually, there is even stuff wrong with the musical numbers. Follow in My Footsteps in uncoordinated, sort of, and Eleanor switched from tap to ballroom to spanish dancing spontaneously. It's NOT funny. The musical arrangements are not as good as in the other B-Way movies, and everthing is all over the place. MGM tried to make a better B-Way Melody than the previous 1936 one, but they failed miserably. They sort of succeeded with the 1940 one, but in my opinion, the 1936 B-Way Melody is the best. Read my 2 reviews of them on Amazon, they are the 2 kid's reviews. All of the B-Way Melodies including Broadway Rhythm are SPECTACULAR, except for this one. Horses and Eleanor Powell don't go together.

That Broadway Rhythm!
Added 1/8/2006
Broadway Melody of 1938 is the third movie in the Broadway Melody series. It stars Eleanor Powell (the Broadway Melody girl, she appeared in three of the movies), Robert Taylor, George Murphy, Buddy Ebsen, Sophie Tucker, and a very young Judy Garland in her first movie role. This movie has a very little plot but the music is alright. Anyway the movie is about some people wanting to star on Broadway. Well one day on the train Robert Taylor finds Eleanor Powell dancing and he wants her for his new show. Well the production runs out of money before it opens and Eleanor Powell comes up with an idea to raise the money by racing her horse! The plot isn't the greatest but it has some great numbers.
Largo al factotum- This is the first song sung in the movie. If your an opera fan you'll like it!
Follow in My Footsteps- This is one of my favorite numbers Eleanor Powell, George Murphy, and Buddy Ebsen sing and dance to this number!
Yours and Mine- Eleanor sings this to Robert Taylor. This song is later danced in the film by Eleanor Powell and George Murphy. And its later danced by Judy and Buddy Ebsen.
Everybody Sing- Judy sings this in the film, and you can see why Judy became such a big star! Another favorite of mine.
Some of These Days- Yes Sophie Tucker even gets to sing.
I'm Feelin' Like a Million- This is my favorite number in the movie. George Murphy and Eleanor Powell sing and dance to this. It's quite a fun number because they get to dance in the rain.
Dear Mr. Gable (You Made Me Love You)- Judy sings this song which she originally sung to Clark Gable on his birthday. In fact this song let her be in this movie! Cute number!
The finale includes Your Broadway and My Broadway with Sophie Tucker singing. Follow in My Footsteps with George Murphy, Eleanor Powell, and Buddy Ebsen dancing again! Then it ends with Broadway Rhythm with Eleanor Powell dancing.
The movie may not have the greatest plot but if you like Judy Garland then see it. I think you should see it just for Eleanor Powell's dancing. She is a really talented dancer!
