Plot: A man with the ability to see the future and change the outcome of events before they occur is forced to choose between saving himself and saving the world in this supernatural thriller starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day, The Edge). Cris Johnson (Cage) is a Las Vegas magician who possesses the unique ability to witness the events of the immediate future moments before they happen. As a child Cris was subjected to a series of cruel experiments by government scientists and doctors, but a change of name and a new identity allowed the tortured psychic to elude detection and start a new life away from the prying eyes of his former captors. Though his clairvoyant vision only extends a few minutes into the future, it has still allowed Cris to eke out a living as a low-rent Las Vegas magician while earning a little extra cash at the blackjack tables. Up to this point in his life Cris has never used his power for anything substantial, but when he experiences a vision of Los Angeles being incinerated in a nuclear holocaust, the small-time magician realizes that he could hold the key to saving millions of lives. But as low as he has tried to lie in recent years, Cris has never completely escaped detection by the government. Now, as terrorists prepare to unleash the ultimate horror on an unsuspecting city, FBI counter terror agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) sets out to capture Cris and convince him to use his exceptional gift to prevent the nuclear nightmare from becoming a terrifying reality. Jessica Biel, Peter Falk, and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the film, which is based on a short story by acclaimed sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Another bad movie from Nic Cage?? Jeez....

Yet another bad movie from Nicholas Cage. And Julianne Moore sucked too. Only redeeming part of the movie was Jessica Biel, who is a babe and did a pretty good job playing the requisite damsel-in-distress.

Cool, fun, not great.

Critics didn't rave over this, but I thought it was a really cool idea and ended up being a very interesting movie. Nic Cage (is his usual self as far as acting goes) plays a man who can see into the future, but only minutes into the future, and Jessica Biel is stunning as his soon to be girlfriend who can help him extend his powers.

This movie has some great scenes where Nic Cage outsmarts or rather sees what his enemy's will do before they do it so he can escape, and Julianne Moore does a good job as the FBI agent who is after him. Where the movie doesn't quite succeed is where Nic has to stop people from setting off a nuclear bomb. Where the movie starts great and gets you involved not only in his mysterious power, but his romantic involvement with Miss Biel, it falls just a little short on the action near its end and the special effects are far from special.

Still I enjoyed the movie and I have watched it several times and continue to enjoy it. It just could have been better.

Time enough for love
Added 5/30/2009

A Las Vegas magician may be more than he appears to be. Nicholas Cage plays the part of Chris Johnson a man with a secret. He has the ability to look two minutes into the future. An FBI agent played by Julianne Moore discovers him. She requires his ability to prevent a catastrophe.

Will Chris Johnson look forward to helping or does he realize that once he is discovered he will be incarcerated for life and treated like a freak?

Just as FBI agents and other nefarious entities are pursuing him, he also has a vision of the future love played by Jessica Biel. What can he do? He must follow his vision; this complicates things.

We have the thrill of following Chris through his trials and tribulations as he balances his social responsibility and his need for love. We must always keep in mind that no good deed goes unpunished.

This is a formula film, which you have seen the formula many times such as in "Run Lola Run" (1998). On the other hand, a more action packed "déjà vu" (2006). I seen the Blu-Ray version of this film and it is well designed for Blu-Ray both in visuals and in sound. Be sure to look at the extras like "two minutes in the future with Jessica Biel". It may not be thought provoking but its darn good entertainment.

Picture and sound quality were awesome- nice price too

Others have provided the story-line. I took the plunge based on customer reviews and the relatively low price for this Blu-Ray title. Nicolas Cage's acting style, not to be disparaging ;), fits well in this movie. The movie is entertaining to those who like action movies that do not follow a linear progression and are not looking for a lot of butt-kicking by the protagonist. This may be the last movie that Peter Falk (one cameo scene) will appear based on recent news that he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and advanced dementia. I found the movie was more entertaining upon a second viewing- many of the subtle plot elements became more evident. The video and sound quality were outstanding (Sony 52" XBR6 and BDP-550 Blu-Ray player).

Definitely worth watching, solid 4 stars

Overall Next is a good movie. I was entertained the whole time which is more than I can say for a lot of movies now days. Nicolas Cage, Jessica Biel and Julianne Moore are the three main characters and the story is about a guy with physic powers who uses them to save his girl and an entire city from being blown up by a nuclear bomb. The story is pretty good but it gets a little far fetched toward the end of the movie.

Good movie, but lacks development
Added 4/17/2009

While Next is an interesting story and not one I've really heard yet, it does lack some development. They should've spent some of their budget on making the film a little longer to develop the stories and characters a little more. Honestly, a 2 hour movie is not hard to sit through. A 90 minute movie that doesn't make sense is hard to sit through.

The story will take some time to understand, you may not understand it until the end but it is a good story, again it just lacks some development. Cage's character definitely lacks development as it is hard to understand how he does some of these things until after he does them. The relationship with Biel's character can be easily explained, however it is somewhat creepy if you know their age difference.

Overall this was an interesting and one I'll probably watch again as it kept my attention for most of the movie and was fairly entertaining. I give it a 7 because it just wasn't developed enough.
