Plot: Just as Bob Hope's My Favorite Blonde (1942) was a takeoff on Alfred Hitchcock, Hope's My Favorite Brunette was a lampoon of the noirish hard-boiled detective school popularized by Raymond Chandler. Awaiting execution on death row, Hope tells the gathered reporters how he got into his present predicament. It seems that Hope was once a baby photographer, his office adjacent to the one leased by a private detective (played in an amusing unbilled cameo by Alan Ladd). While hanging around the p.i.'s office, Hope is mistaken for the detective by beautiful client Dorothy Lamour. She hires Hope to search for her missing uncle, and also entrusts him with a valuable map. Hope's diligent (if inept) sleuthing takes him to a shady rest sanitarium, where he runs afoul of lamebrained henchman Lon Chaney, Jr. and sinister, knife-throwing Peter Lorre. Both are in the employ of attorney Charles Dingle, who is responsible for the disappearance of Lamour's uncle. Escaping the sanitarium with Lamour in tow, Hope follows the trail of evidence to noted geologist Reginald Denny. The geologist is murdered, and Hope is accused of the crime. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Pretty goofy and a lot of fun

Ronnie Jackson dreams of being a hard-boiled detective, like his next-door neighbor, Sam McCloud, and when a beautiful woman walks into Sam's office and finds Ronnie there, she assumes he is Sam. What a break! But, Ronnie's big break soon turns into a big disaster when he finds himself on the run being hunted by a group of killers. Can Ronnie stay one step ahead of the bad guys and save his precious skin? Oh yeah, and the girl's skin too?

This is a fun old movie, combining Bob Hope with siren Dorothy Lamour on the one hand, and the likes of Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney Jr. on the other. It's pretty lightweight, but also pretty goofy and a lot of fun. If you like that oddball humor that Bob Hope did so well then you will like this movie. I know that I did!

I love this movie. Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr... what more could you ask for! The version I watched 20 years ago on the late, late show was miles better than this horrible transfer. Since this movie (incredibly) got forgotten by the copyright office and ended up in the Public Domain, all you can find are cheap, HORRIBLE tansfers to DVD's like this god-awful loser. It's better you never even watch this film than to see it in this terribe representation. Why Hollywood wouldn't want to protect gems like these is beyond me, but since they don't give a flying leotard, don't you. This grainy, blurry, audibly incomprehensible, hardly watchable transfer is a complete loser. Don't waste your money. Keep waiting for the "restored version" which hopefully comes out before 2021. Cheers.

Beware!!!! This is one of Bob Hope's best comedy but do NOT buy this version by Alpha Video. Horrible, horrible quality! I dock it 1 star because of that. Get another version & you will enjoy it.

Hope in his prime

Some of the gags would be timlier and better understoon if this was the late 1940s. All the same, this is one of Hope's best comedies and shows why he is an icon among comedians and comic actors. Amazingly, although he was already in his early forties when he made this classic comedy, he would continue to entertain for almost another 60 years.

Baby boomers who only remember Hope as that "square guy" their parents watched on NBC in the 1960s and 1970s can get a true appreciation of Hope's talents in this film. For Gen'X'ers and Gen Y'ers, who may know little or nothing of Hope, this film is an excellent introduct.
