Plot: Joan Micklin Silver tries her mighty best to wring something substantial out of Frank Mugavero's banal sit-com screenplay concerning the effect of divorce on the divorced parents' off-spring. Hillary Wolf stars as Laura Chartoff, a lonely thirteen-year-old girl who is the victim of multiple parental divorces and remarriages. She lives with her current stepfather Keith Powers (David Strathairn), a cool businessman, and her flighty, self-absorbed mother Melinda (Margaret Whitton). Her biological father David (Griffin Dunne) is a struggling artist separated from his second wife Barb (Patricia Kalember) and is now living with a younger woman Stephanie (Adrienne Shelley), who is pregnant with twins. After a fight with her mother and stepfather, Laura runs away to a rustic cabin in the woods being built by her older stepbrother Josh (Dan Futterman). When she spots Keith and Melinda walking up the road to the cabin, Laura dashes off into the forest. Reported missing, all of the members of Laura's extended family converge at the cabin to try to find her. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Classic dysfunctional family movie

While this movie was enjoyable, it was a little silly. I would recommend it but only to someone who can look at it for what it is a movie.

Great Family Movie About A Dysfunctional Family
Added 1/20/2009

This movie sounds like it would be really bad, but it's actually one of my favorite movies from childhood. Laura (Hillary Wolf) is fed up with her family of parents, step-parents, siblings and stepsiblings, so she takes off. She thinks that running away from home will solve all of her problems. While Laura goes off on her adventure, her family must work together to bring her back home, and they find out that maybe they can get along after all, if they really try. It sounds really cheesy, but it's funny and it's cute and it's a really good movie for those between the ages of 10 and 14, I'd say. But I don't think adults would mind it all that much, to tell you the truth. They might enjoy it just a little bit themselves. Or maybe I'm just biased because this is a great childhood memory for me. The acting is pretty good. The characters seem like real people, as opposed to cliches. They've got all of the quirks and eccentricities of people you'd know in your own life.

Great Movie
Added 7/4/2008

I may have been a couple of years younger than Hilary Wolf when this film came out. I grew up watching it and it is still one of my favorite movies ever. Not only does the story hit home, it also had great selections of song choices that were heartfelt. I can't find any of the songs or anything about the artists, which sucks because there are a few that really touch me and bring tears to my eyes. They have the flavor of Shannon Noll and I love that guy. So if anyone has any heads up on where I can possibly find songs from this movie, just let me know. I'd much oblige!
If you like movies like this, then you will love Dreamkeeper. I think every kid and adult should see that movie.

I just finished watching this movie on ABC Family:
It's really good! I didn't even realize that Sam was Ben Savage!
Kinda weird, because i love Boy Meets World!
Definitely watch this movie! It reminds me of Tune In Anytime by Caroline B. Cooney.
