Not exactly Chevy Chase's best comedy
Added 7/27/2009
Though Chevy Chase was the main character of the film, he was actually the least appealing character in the movie. He seemed like a pretty depressed guy right from the word go, and his appeal (even as the main comedian) just seemed unenjoyable to watch. He had too many scenes where he just sat there staring forward, and if he spoke, he said something that just contributed to him being continuing unpleasant company. I think everyone in the film showed a great more patience for Chevy's character than what he deserves. Even before the nuclear waste dump incident.
This was not that great of a comedy even though it really did have a great all-star cast. Dabney Coleman, Mary Kay Place (who was far too optimistic about life to have ever been Max's former wife), Brian-Doyle Murray, Patti D'Arbanville, and Nell Carter. These people all contributed stronger supportive roles than what Chevy Chase brought to the film. But, it may not be Chevy Chase's fault either. But, I would imagine he would be disappointed with this films overall appeal if he himself watched it today.
I own this DVD because I saw this film during a prime time of my exciting military life in the eighties. I think even Chevy's "Foul Play" was better than this film, but my favorite Chevy Chase film is still "Seems Like Old Times." But again, what helped that movie was all the great supporting cast members.
Come to think of it, I don't think Chevy Chase was ever that funny. He was just popular at the time, that's all. "Fletch" was dumb; National Lampoon's "Vacation" was dumb. His small role in "Caddyshack" wasn't that great either.
Gee, I think I just talked myself into getting rid of this DVD of "Modern Problems." I don't think I'll ever watch it again anytime soon.

Underrated Chevy Film
Added 4/5/2009
This movie was not as popular as Chevy Chase's other films, but I loved watching it on cable as a teen. The jokes are, of course, has quite a bit of innuendo, but their funny.
What's not to love about Dabney Coleman trying to reason with a man who uses his powers to slowly drag him across a wall.
Oh, and the things he could do to his girlfriend by just raising his eyebrows.
This was definitely a cookie movie, but it was fun, and interesting from the psychic powers point of view. I mean, if you're going to have powers, why not have a little fun with it?

Modern Problems

While this movie didn't receive the greatest of reviews by the critics, I have always thought it was one of the best and funniest of the Chevy Chase collection. Great acting by Chevy, Dabney Coleman, Nell Carter, and Patti D'Arbanville. I am truly grateful to have added this movie to my collection.

Best Chevy Chase Film
Added 3/11/2009
This is not a gag-a-minute film. Chevy is not the drugged out cynical playboy in this. Its a paranormal romantic comedy sorta like a lower-budget spin-off of "Ghostbusters". Because the film has a "wacky" comedy element, people think this is supposed to be a more wild and fun movie. The pacing is slower, the acting is better (especially Chase, Coleman and Carter) and the concept is more out there. This film has more in common with Jerry Lewis or old slapstick than "Caddyshack" or "Zapped!". Serious comedy buffs need to own this! Brilliant physical comedy and a few 80s one-liners to boot. I wish Chase was given deeper characters like this.

Super Funny Movie
Added 12/27/2008
I loved this movie when it first came out. It's hilarious! It's been one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time! All the characters play off each other well. I think it definitely should be rated PG-13 for some sexual scenes and references.

"I Just Want My Milkduds!" - Chemistry, Deadpan, Simon's Timing... Great 80's Comedy
Added 10/7/2009
I have seen this movie dozens of times over the years. When I was a kid they used to play it on HBO like every ten minutes. Neil Siomon was at the peak of his comedic perfection. Chevy Chase & Goldie Hawn rekindle their chemistry from Foul Play and take it to the next level. Charles Grodin's deadpan and Robert Guillame's presence just add to the mix to make it perfect. T.K. Carter and a list of other cameo-esque bit parts bring it home. Hysterical. I watched it with my 13 year old daughter and I gotta tell you it was a real treat to see a movie that relied on dialogue and acting and was funny at every turn. Sloppy by today's standards as far as suspending our disbelief in a few places, with a bit of hurried ending, still this movie is what comedy was in the late 70s and early 80s. Genuine. Perfect. I don't want to get into the old cliche of "they don't make them like this anymore," but being a cliche doesn't make it any less true: they don't. This is lost Hollywood. Chevy, like Bill Murray, like Belushi, like so many of his Saturday Night Live brethren, was the ultimate cynical smartass and it worked so well (Any chance of slowing down to 55?). Goldie was the ultimate ditzy blonde. Seems Like Old Times is just that, a fond look back at what a simple, pleasing comedy was like. Excellent!
Dig it!

Very Funny!!!
Added 6/9/2009
This movie was extremely funny! Chevy Chase is always hilarious at getting into bad situatios, like being forced to rob a bank and becomes a fugitive. Chase stars as a writer named Nick Gardenia, who is the ex husband of Hawn's character, Glenda Gardenia Parks who has re-married a District Attorney named Ira. Nick desperately needs Glenda's help to hide from the police. She reluctantly hides him at her house, and he is always so close to being caught by her new husband. I love when Glenda and Ira are trying to have dinner with the Governor, and Nick poses as a waiter. Will Nick be able to prove his innocence and still get his ex-wife to love him again? I highly recommend SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES!!!

Highly Overrated
Added 1/19/2009
I don't always go along with the Amazon review, but in this case it's dead on. With all the 5 star reviews on this listing I was expecting a little bit more. I love Chevy, Goldie and Charles Grodin as well, but this movie is a bit tepid the first good hour and only managed to arouse continued interest towards the last half hour.. I'd say rent it (wishing I had), and if that doesn't sate your appetite for the movie then buy it. Neil Simon has often been hit and miss for me.. the screen play in this one is, as the Amazon review puts it, "forgettable". It's better moments include slapstick farce, the storyline isn't that clever (not to mention beleivable) and it's stars are the main thing holding it up - they do a good job, but there's only so much you can do with a lackluster script. In a nutshell, it's more yawns than laughs. Not awful, but not great either. 3.5 stars.. 4 at most.
