Plot: This feature-length spin-off of the popular television horror anthology is directed by John Harrison, who directed many episodes of the television series. The film consists of four grisly and gruesome horror teasers. The Wraparound Story stars Deborah Harry as Betty, a chef with a kitchen complete with Cuisinart and dungeon. She plans to cook a little boy, who delays his execution by telling Betty three tales of terror. The first tale is Lot 249, based on the mummy story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The tale concerns Bellingham (Steve Buscemi), a bug-eyed graduate student who has raised a mummy from the dead. The second tale, Cat from Hell, adapted by George A. Romero from a Stephen King story, deals with a broken-down millionaire (William Hickey), who has made his millions by developing habit-forming painkillers. He is convinced that, since 5,000 cats have been killed in his lab experiments in order to develop his pills, a stray cat has killed his family. He hires a hit man (David Johansen) to track down the cat and rub him out. The third tale, Lover's Vow, is based on Woman in the Snow, one of the episodes in Kwaidan.James Remar plays an artist who strikes a deal with the devil and is rewarded with a beautiful wife (Rae Dawn Chong) and a respectful art career. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

How To NOT Get Eaten...

A woman (Deborah Harry from Videodrome) is busy preparing for her roasted paperboy dinner. Said paperboy (Matthew Lawrence) comes up w/ a plan to forestall his grisly fate by telling the crazed cook some stories. In LOT 249, a college nerd (Fargo's Steve Buscemi) uses an ancient mummy to exact vengeance on his idiot tormentors (including Hannibal's Julianne Moore as well as a seemingly 12yo Christian Slater) w/ surprising results. Next, in THE CAT FROM HELL, a zillionaire (William Hickey) hires a hitman (David Johansen) to terminate the family cat. Johansen is great as the smug killer, overmatched by the ferocious feline. Finally, we have LOVER'S VOW, where an artist (James Rebar) witnesses a murder-by-hideous-gargoyle one dark night. The creature spares his life, so long as he never tells a living soul about what he has seen. Can our hero keep his trap shut, or will he blab? This one features the breathtakingly-beautiful Rae Dawn Chong! TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE is one of the better horror anthology movies. It's up there along side of CREEPSHOW, CAT'S EYE, (the original) TALES FROM THE CRYPT, TWILIGHT ZONE, and DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS. DARKSIDE is certainly one of the more solid, consistent, and gory of the bunch!...

This is one of my favorites! It's full of actors and actresses that are very well known such as Christian Slater, Julianne Moore, Matthew Lawrence and even a rock star...Deborah Harry(Blondie). So many tales and all of them are scary in their own way.

Chilly little horror anthology that mostly succeeds

Hyped by Tom Savini himself as "the real Creepshow 3", I was more than a little excited to check out Tales From the Darkside: The Movie. Based on the popular horror anthology television series, Tales is comprised of three short films containing input from the likes of George Romero and Stephen King among others. We begin with a little boy who has been captured by a witch and is about to be prepared for dinner. To stall her, he pulls out a book and reads the following stories.

Lot 249- After being cheated out of a scholarship, a dorky would-be archeologist raises a decaying mummy from his eternal slumber to seek revenge on those who wronged him. As far as storylines are concerned it doesn't get much more generic than this, although I presume the simplicity of it was supposed to be part of the charm. It's always a pleasure to see Steve Buscemi, but even he can't boost this above being just average.

Cat From Hell- A rich old man who is the head of a pharmaceutical company is being tormented by a murderous black cat due to their product testing on cats. He hires a hit man to kill the cat before it kills him. This story is just ridiculous and easily the weakest of the three. A killer cat? They couldn't come up with anything even a little better than that?...

Lover's Vow- After being dumped by his agent, a struggling artist witnesses a gargoyle-like creature murder a man in an alleyway. The creature corners him, making him promise never to tell what he witnessed, to which he agrees. Immediately after the incident, he meets the woman of his dreams and his art career explodes into success, but this all may be part of a deal he made with the creature. I won't give away the ending of this one, it's entertaining but is also very predictable.

Overall Tales From the Darkside is decent, but it sure isn't Creepshow. Hell, I wouldn't even say it's as good as Creepshow 2. However I have no trouble viewing it as "the real Creepshow 3" after witnessing the utter abortion of a movie released in 2006, a sequel in name only entitled Creepshow III. Never seen that one? Keep it that way. The acting is adaquaete as are the special effects, and the stories were alright, so I give it a very solid three stars. Absolutely recommended for fans of good horror anthologies.

Great movie!

I was looking for this movie for a long time. I was thrilled when I finally found it on Amazon. I also remember watching the TV series back in the 80's. A young boy reads stories from a book to distract a witch who plans to eat him. This film has the very handsome, young Christian Slater; Deborah Harry from the 80's rock band Blonde; Steve Buscemi who played Mr. Pink in "Reservoir Dogs"; Rae Dawn Chong who also starred in "Quest for Fire"(another great film) and many other great actors. If you enjoyed "Twilight Zone: The Movie," you will definitely enjoy this film.
