Plot: Born to a middle-class family in suburban Australia, Leigh Bowery moved to London, England, in the early '80s with a desire to re-invent himself. Always fascinated with fashion and the expressive possibilities of clothing, Bowery quickly became a noted figure in London's image-obsessed New Romantic scene, where (as Marcus Bracewell put it) getting ready [to go out] became an art form. While Bowery's elaborate creations were striking, Bowery designed clothing as an art form rather than as salable fashion items -- creating costumes for theater pieces, performance art pieces, or his own appearances at clubs, Bowery used clothing to confront, confuse and challenge those around him, rather than to simply adorn the body. Bowery later expanded on his philosophy and approach with his own nightclub, {~Taboo}, and a musical group, Minty. Bowery died of AIDS-related illnesses in 1994, but this documentary -- which features interviews with his friends, family and colleagues, including Boy George, who has since staged a musical based in part on Bowery's life -- examines his life and times, as well as the lasting impact of his work. The Legend of Leigh Bowery received its world premiere in the spring of 2002 at the {~It's All True Documentary Film Festival} on Sao Paulo, Brazil. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

INTERSTING WELL DONE DOCUMENTARY

I found this piece to be very well done, in as far as how much first hand information they present to craft Bowery's life story. From childhood to his untimely death from Hiv complications in 1994.I would have liked to see, other artists coment on Bowerys influence and importance on the art scene of the time and future. On a personnel note. I do have to say that I found Bowery lacked in Moral character. He knew full well he was HIV positive in the mid eighties , but still continued to have sex with multitudes of partners.A topic I notice, that is never discussed by his friends in the documentary or for that matter in any Bowery information I have seen.

Get The Cockettes instead. It's much more interesting.

This is a tiring attempt to make a very ambitious but untalented person seem like somebody important. It succeeds only in showing how empty of value the contemporary "art" world was during the 80s and 90s, and probably still is today. People who admire arrogant, ugly superficiality may appreciate this irritating movie. I hated it.

For a somewhat similar but vastly more entertaining documentary about another outrageous misfit, but one who DID have talent, watch Hibiscus in The Cockettes.

This movie gives you education on Leigh Bowery. He was so innovative that everyone interested in art, fashion and culture NEED to see this movie. It is well done and the "talking heads" are as interesting as the subject. It is shocking, it is over-the-top, and it is brilliant. SEE THIS FILM!

"The Legend of Leigh Bowery"

One of a Kind

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Leigh Bowery was unknown to me before I watched this short film, He died of AIDS at the age of 33 after having a unique life as a true individual. The movie gives an honest portrait of a very complex person who lived under glitter, high energy and wild, wild costumes. Leigh was born in Australia to devout parents who were active in the Salvation Army. His strange behavior took him from Oz to London--to the gay clubs, to costume design and performance art. His life came to a head with a series of touching and astonishing portraits painted of him, in 1990, by artist Lucie Freud.
Through interviews with his family, friends and one odd widow named Nicola; we get a balanced look at his life. Leigh could walk into a nightclub and make it his own in a matter of moments. He and his costumes were always over the top. Leigh Bowery was a visionary in time and in his craft. He was an unusual person who began to make his mark on the world once he moved to London. His upbringing would let him go no further. He was outer worldly and is described as living art. He wore his own creations and they were bizarre to say the least. His life was nocturnal and he commanded attention. Some say he wore his crazy costumes to shock people and to make them not know whether they should be embarrassed or not or just stare and then run away. He was never ignored and he loved the attention. He was ahead of his time.
Of particular interest are the scenes of the eighties. But even more interesting are his final years when he sat for portraits, He had already become an icon and a darling of the new wave and the avant garde. Whether he was in a gallery showing himself or nude or pretending to be giving birth, he was always outlandish and shocking.
I am so sorry that I missed him. He sounds like quite a character. The film shows us what we al have missed,
