Plot: A woman is torn between betraying her benefactor and keeping her pledge to the man she loves in this romantic drama. Nancy (Kathleen Quinlan) and Michael (Stephen Collins) are two college students who have fallen in love and want to get married. However, Michael's widowed mother, Marion (Beatrice Straight), is opposed to the match; she wants Michael to take over the family business, and she's convinced that Nancy would be a bad influence. Later, Nancy and Michael get into a terrible auto accident -- he falls into a deep coma and she suffers severe facial disfigurement. Neither Nancy or her family have the money for plastic surgery; Marion agrees to pay for Nancy's facial reconstruction, but only under the condition that she change her name and never see Michael again. Nancy has little choice but to agree, and she changes her name to Marie; however, years later Marie meets Michael, and their love begins anew. The Promise was based on a story by best-selling author Danielle Steele. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Great Movie and now I finally found it on DVD!

I'm mainly writing this review to let everyone know this is now on DVD. Apparently in 2007 they released a 2 disc Danielle Steel collection with 4 movies total including "The Promise". I've been looking for a DVD version to buy as a gift for my niece over the last year or two and I wanted to give everyone else a heads up. Hope this helps everyone looking for a DVD version. FYI I found it right here on Amazon so either do a search or look and see if it's listed under the customers who viewed this item also viewed section of the page.

Joy to watch
Added 1/15/2007

Always remembered this movie. What a gem, what a joy to watch. This is one of the best romance movies to date. Falls in the same category as Madam X with Lana Turner. Please bring it out on DVD. Highly recommended for the romantic at hart.

*****Fantastic Movie! True Romance at its Very Best!
Added 8/23/2006

I saw this movie last week for the first time since it first came out. Still as emotionally powerful. Stephen Collins-of course-went on to become a major television star for over ten years. Kathleen Quinlan is stunningly beautiful. Of course, when the movie starts(before the car accident) she is a loving ugly duckling-that's what makes the movie. Larry Luckinbill and Beatrice Straight also give incredible supporting performances.

This movie moves-and moves fast, from one transition to another.

An amazing musical soundtrack supports it all.

San Francisco makes an interesting backdrop, but you wouldn't notice it much once the plot gets going. This movie isn't just fantastic, it's an emotional throwback to a time when our feelings were king and queen and high technology just didn't exist. The budget is low, the script so ordinary-and that's what makes The Promise all the more extraordinary. It's okay to cry, it's okay to love and it's okay to be yourself in love-all major themes within this movie that still ring true today. The Promise doesn't date, and that what makes this movie's magic lesson of love and commitment all the more extraordinary even today.

Solid acting here by Collins, whose performance landed him the lead role in the Star Trek movie, his next film.
