This is definitely an extremely well conceived, writen, casted, produced, acted and profoundly entertaining series...no wonder NBC cancelled it!

It's a Shame...

It's a shame that this show was canceled after just one season, it was so well made, and very unique. I love Boomtown!

You won't be sorry

A stellar addition to the category of "Why did they cancel that show but let ..... (insert any number of silly shows here) survive?", Boomtown is second only to "Homicide: Life on the Streets" as a quality production. I am so grateful to be able to revisit these episodes. The writing is fantastic; characters complex; there is comparatively little on-screen violence, relying largely on character development. The framework of the episodes is one in which the plot is seen from the viewpoint of selected characters and gives a "Rashomon"-like structure; the resolution of the story is usually genuinely unexpected and (I hate to get all sappy on you, but it's true) uplifting.

A wonderful show that deserved more
Added 5/31/2009
Truly, I think this is one of the best shows not only to come out of NBC, but to ever be put on the air. The creators took a familiar setting - cops and lawyers piecing together the puzzle of the crime - and gave it new life with an understanding from everyone's personal point of view. The entire cast was wonderful, the writing was wonderful, and it still baffles me how something like this could be taken off the air so quickly. I came to the show for Donnie Wahlberg (long after my favorite New Kid stopped singing, I followed), but I stayed for the whole package. A must-own boxset, and you'll also be asking the question of why it was ever cancelled.

A Delightful Surprise - Loved it, loved it, loved it
Added 8/2/2009
I had never heard of this film until it was shown at our Cinema Society, with an in-person visit from Robert Forster. It is a totally charming, very funny, light-hearted but very human crime drama/comedy and redeeming love story. Bess Armstrong is terrific. So it the plot and surprise ending. Brilliant, this was a cinema favorite this year. A great Indie film, it won't disappoint. (Not a chick flick.) Too bad it got very limited release.

Great Independent Movie

Great movie, don't know why most people missed this. Starts strange, but one of those movies where when you get to the end, you really like the whole experience. Amazon shipped quicker than they said. Great job Amazon.

Sometimes it takes a lot more than two

"Beware, I am the jewel and around me there is lead, pallid, ignominious lead!"
A friend of mine reminded me of this movie recently via e-mail, so I stuck in an old copy and gave it another viewing. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much I decided to write a review to remind myself how much I enjoyed it in case I ever forgot again. I think it was Oscar Wilde, or Mel, the cook on Alice, who said something like only a shallow person doesn't judge a book by its cover. I don't think that's true with film, because like so many others, if I'd judged this movie by its cover art I would've never taken the time to watch it, since on the surface it appears to be another generic heist movie. I'm glad I bothered, though. Sure, it is a standard story, but what saves this low-budget film are the strong performances from leads Robert Forster and Donnie Wahlberg, as well as interesting supporting characters, including brothel workers played by Bess Armstrong and Jasmine Guy. Bess Armstrong teaches Wahlburg's rookie salesman character many important lessons that help him keep his job, mainly how to communicate with those different from you, that you get what you give, and the more honest you are with yourself the easier it is to sniff out other people's lies. Whether or not she's able to follow her own lessons isn't clear, and maybe it isn't important, since Wahlberg and his partner wind up better people in the end. Director Dan M. Cohen is a gifted director who knows how to inject humanity into a variety of stock characters. If you're someone who has a nose for films like "One False Move" or the films of Victor Nunez, you'll probably enjoy "Diamond Men."
