Plot: Two people develop an unusual relationship that bends the boundaries of time and place in this romantic fantasy. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) is a doctor who lives in a beautiful home by a lake. Forced to move elsewhere, she requests that any correspondence that arrives at the lake house be passed on to her new address. To her surprise, she soon receives a romantic note from Alex Burnham (Keanu Reeves), an architect who lives in the cottage she once called home. However, a look at the postmark on the letter reveals that he lived at the home two years before she did, and that somehow they've come in contact with one another through a space in time. A remake of Lee Hyun-seung's acclaimed Korean romance Il Mare (aka Siworae), The Lake House was the first American production from Argentinean filmmaker Alejandro Agresti; the supporting cast includes Christopher Plummer, Dylan Walsh, and Lynn Collins. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Suspend your disbelief and pay a visit to the Lake House
Added 11/13/2009

The movie "The Lake House" is certainly a movie that challenges you to suspend your disbelief but it seems a majority of people seem incapable of doing so for this movie, yet are able to believe that a mystical force controls all things in the Universe (Star Wars), that a man can fly (Superman) or, gasp, that a truck can turn into a robot (Transformers).
For me this movie is pure fantasy and I have no problem taking it for what it is - namely a romantic movie with a supernatural element. I don't sit there and try and figure out how or why the mailbox works the way it does just like I don't sit there and wonder how the Enterprise reaches warp speed (Star Trek) or the man outraces the Sun (Mummy Returns).
The plot is basically a love story and rather than two people falling in love over the internet and e-mail they instead do it the old fashioned way and fall in love through snail mail. However the device of the time difference means that the two cannot simply meet face-to-face in a traditional date. The plot reminded me of a similar plot device in a TV movie I saw where two lovers corresponded the same way across centuries with the letters magically appearing in an old cabinet.
Take the movie for what it is and pick up this enjoyable, charming romantic movie on Blu-ray for under $10 (as of Nov. 13, 2009). The audio and video quality are far from steller, but they are better than on an upconverted DVD.

Romantic fantasy

It's one of my favorite romantic fantasies. Reeves and Bullock are perfect of a romance that exists in two alternate time periods one in the past, the other in the present as they converge to a rapidly emerging future. Can't reveal the ending or it will spoil the story, but it leaves you with a wondering sense of the power of choices and coincidences in our lives.

PEOPLE PLZ READ!

The Lake House is a FANTASY romantic movie! Keyword people: FANTASY. All the things in the movie where 2 people fall in love across time is impossible of coarse. But if you stop analysing the movie or have questions about it such as " that is not possible" you will not understand the movie. The main thing about this movie is that 2 people are lonely and have finally met their love of their life and want to be together! You already know that this movie is Fantasy so therefore, dont be asking questions, just see it and pretend that those fantasy things do not excist. In the end this movie is so lovable and is worth buying and seen it over and over again. Dont ask questions because they will never be answered! its fantasy! just watch the movie period! Dont be stupid spending time hating this movie cuz its impossible to understand or know it cant be for reals!!!!!!!! keyword: Fantasy!

Great plot, but...

I'll never understand why directors take a great plot, good acting, and all-round good movie and feel they need to stick in people living together who aren't married and camera shots of a woman's chest! Those two events if deleted from the movie would have had NO impact whatsoever. Good grief...is it simply that movie viewers today are too stupid to enjoy a movie for its quality alone? I don't think so.
