Plot: Robert De Niro made his directorial debut with this expanded adaptation of Chazz Palminteri's one-character play. DeNiro's role of Lorenzo Anello, an Italian-America bus driver, is secondary to the part of his son Calogero, played by young Francis Capra. The top dog in Calogero's Bronx neighborhood is flashy wiseguy Sonny (Chazz Palminteri). When the boy witnesses Sonny commit a murder, he honors the code of the streets and refuses to tell the cops. Sonny befriends him and introduces the impressionable youngster to the creature comforts that mob connections can bring. But though he idolizes Sonny, the boy loves and respects his decent, honest father. It takes a major tragedy for the 17-year-old boy (now played by Lillo Brancato) to decide his true course in life. Though titled A Bronx Tale and set in the Bronx of the 1960s, the film was actually shot in the somewhat safer environs of Brooklyn and Queens. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of the best movies I've ever seen. Robert DiNero and the rest of the cast are excellent. This movie has violence, drama and the plot is absorbing. It's about a young boy trying to find himself in the streets of New York. The actor who portrays DeNiro's son is riveting. I bought this movie just to watch his acting. He's that good. He gives a powerful performance you want to see over and over again. The one who plays him as a younger boy is also excellent. This movie deals with racism and love between a young black girl and Italian boy. It's well done.

From One Man Show to Ensemble Tour De Force

Adapted from Chazz Palmentieri's ground-breaking one-man Broadway show (which thankfully went back on tour this year), the film version of "A Bronx Tale" brings the 17 characters Palmentieri portrayed onstage to vivid and compassionate life. In his debut as a director, Robert DeNiro shows an actor's sense of creating by using a very light director's touch, and allowing his cast and the script (also by Palmentieri) to take center stage.

The film takes one breif incident from the author's childhood and shows how his environment, sensibilities, parental guidence and the experiences of his contemporaries frame that incident and shape his future. A must-see for all.
