Plot: How would you feel if you came back to life over a century after your death to discover that you'd become famous in the interim? A woman creates a magic potion that can bring people back from the dead, and first recipient of this special treatment in none other than Vincent Van Gogh (played by (Abbott Alexander). Vincent finds himself alive and more than a bit disoriented on our astral plane as he finds himself in the midst of the Tournament of Roses Parade. Since he died obscure and penniless, Vincent is amazed to discover that his work has become well-known and quite valuable; he begins stealing his works from art galleries and collectors, while Murphy (Sally Kirkland), an LAPD detective, is assigned to find whoever's been heisting all the Van Goghs in the area. Vincent has a hard time getting anyone to believe he is who he claims to be, though his lawyer (Lou Wagner) and a young painter (Lisa Waltz) seem to be convinced. Director Paul Davids was best-known for his television work and for the documentary Timothy Leary's Dead. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Starry Eyes for Van Gogh"
Added 10/4/2008

This romantic comedy fantasy is a must-have completion to my video collection, since it crosses over my three favorite genres: romantic comedy, time travel fantasy, and Van Gogh. Lt. Murphy makes such a rich nemesis for the small cadre of friends who pack a powerful punch to the elite world of art collectors. Thought light and humorous, the film challenges our assumptions about art and carries some thought-provoking messsages woven into it.

Art educators grab it
Added 4/1/2008

If you teach art grades 5-7 this is a video to have. It's a fun, corny, silly, movie about Van Gogh coming back from the dead into the 21st century! I was amazed at how much the kids enjoyed it and really were able to pull on our studies of Van Gogh. I would have it on the shelf for a rainy day. The only negative is that there is one very short scene where there is a nude model in a painting class...it is a quick clip, but you can fast forward through it and the kids will never know. This has to be the only reason it got a PG-13 rating. Preview it first.

It's Not The Worst I've Ever Seen...
Added 1/6/2005

Van Gogh wearing eyeliner, and delivering some of the worst movie lines ever in an accent that ocillates between an obscure Transylvanian dialect and slurred Irish. Good Times. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but certainly one of the most ridiculous.

STARRY NIGHT
Added 10/18/2003

STARRY NIGHT is amazingly magical. It resonated to the artist in all of us who have struggled with art all of our lives and have not been recognized in our lifetimes. It gives hope. Abbott Alexander's fanciful portrayal of Vincent is wonderful -- you can't keep your eyes off of him. He is intensely charismatic. I bought many copies to send to family back home -- as this is a must see for all families to watch together -- and there are not many films out there like that.

Light and fun. Gives a bit of sunshine to the way people invision Vincent van Gogh. I think that if you see this movie with knowing that is fantasy and a kind of what if story line...
Then en you will smile and feel got at the end.
