Plot: While Walt Disney's 1961 filmization of Victor Herbert's Babes in Toyland pales in comparison to the 1934 movie version starring Laurel & Hardy, the Disney film is an unqualified classic when compared to the ill-starred 1986 TV version. Adapted for television by playwright Paul Zindel, the 1986 film stars Drew Barrymore as Lisa Piper, a contemporary girl whisked off Wizard of Oz fashion to Toyland. Here her friends and family from the real world are reincarnated as villainous Barnaby (Richard Mulligan), Old Mother Hubbard (Eileen Brennan), Jack-Be-Nimble (Keanu Reeves) et. al. Only March of the Toys and Toyland have been retained from the original Victor Herbert score; the rest of the songs were specially written for this adaptation by Leslie Bricusse-and, suffice to say, these were hardly classics. Irreparably damaging this version was its 180-minute length-over twice as long as the Laurel & Hardy version, and not even half as good. I ABSOLUTLY LOVE THIS MOVIE TO DEATH, BUT IT'S ONLY ON VHS. IT'S ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS OF BABES IN TOYLAND IN MY OPINION. IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET THIS IN DVD FORM, LET ME KNOW I'D DO ANYTHING TO FIND IT. LET ME KNOW IT WOULD REALLY MAKE MY HOLIDAY AND YEAR. AND YOU IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE AND STILL HAVE A VHS BUY IT ASAP, WHY YOU STILL READING, BUY IT NOW!!!

I've been watching this movie since I was very young. Some of the stuff can be a little weird but it's imaginational! It always puts me in such a kid like mood when I watch it. Will definately pass it down.

So bad it's hilarious

Out of my fondness for earlier versions of Babes in Toyland, I tried this one. My 11 year old daughter was with me, and at first we were put off by the horrendous acting, directing, writing, and production values, and then we began to find them funny. We watched the whole thing, and and had a great time making fun of it. We plan to keep our tape as a Christmas classic of popcorn camp. It includes a stellar cast, each turning in the worst performances of their careers. Just try to look at poor Keanu Reaves and imagine him becoming a real actor -- it can't be done! And sweet little Drew, who was so precious as a child actor, and would turn into a fine adult actress, well here, at this in-between age -- all I can say is, "bless her heart."

like watching a car crash

This is perhaps the worst made for tv christmas special ever broadcast. The acting in the claymation of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer merits an Oscar in comparison. How Keneau Reeves and Drew Barrymore put this behind themselves is the real question. Watch it only in 5 minute segments or your brain may explode.
