Plot: In the bush country of South Africa in the late 19th century, chauvinistic hunter Gert vanDen Bergh calculatedly offends a local tribal chief. Given several opportunities, he refuses to apologize. As consequence, vanDen Bergh and the rest of his hunting party are captured by the tribesmen and grotesquely tortured to death. The only white man spared is safari-guide Cornel Wilde, whom the natives respect and vice versa. The tribesmen offer Wilde a chance to survive; stripping him naked and giving him a knife to defend himself, they set Wilde free in the jungle, in preparation of hunting him down like a lion. Given a head start equal to the distance one of the tribesman can fire an arrow, Wilde is pursued by the tribe's six most accomplished warriors. The rest of this thrill-a-minute film follows Wilde into the underbrush in his desperate, resourceful flight for life. Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey was filmed entirely on location under circumstances nearly as dangerous as the plight of its protagonist. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

About human nature ........
Added 8/13/2009

This movie is a truly well made classic action and drama combination. Very few films made in all the history of Hollywood can match this meaningful story about the human condition and it shortcomings. Even with the smattering of mild violence it is a movie made for the viewing of all ages. This is one of those movies I have seen 20 times or more but never leaves you with an 'empty' feeling at the end.

Rather than give you a long dissertation I will say to get this DVD as it is money well spent for your movie library. Enjoy.

Loved the film...
Added 5/21/2009

I saw this film years ago and it always stuck with me. I am buying the DVD because I consider it a classic and I want it in my DVD collection.
I wonder why we never see great old films and productions like this on TV these days. I am sick of all the garbage we see on our big screens - they must think we are idiots. Enough of those 'reality' shows.

Simple Story.....And It Works
Added 3/27/2009

It is good to see this on a Criterion DVD and with a sharp 2.35:1 widescreen picture.

Boy, this is about a simple an action story as you're going to find, but it works, and has its interesting moments. Almost the entire film is devoted to a safari guide/hunter being chased (for the kill) by members of a angry tribe. Those tribe members had been insulted by an obnoxious member of the safari group and this good-guy guide (Cornell Wilde) has to run for his life.

Along his escape for survival, we, the viewers, are treated almost to a National Geographic-type tour of the African jungle with many wild animals, crocodiles, poisonous insects, snakes and - the most dangerous species of them all: naked women!

The film looks dated here and there but it's now over 40 years old. There is not much English dialog in here, but it's not needed.

Outstanding movie

Definitely watch this movie if you get a chance.

There's very little spoken dialogue in this movie. The movie is a brilliant combination of great writing, acting, camera work and music.

It's one of my all time favorites which I try to watch a couple times a year.

Classic adventure movie!
Added 12/12/2008

This classic adventure movie tells the tale of a party of ivory hunters' fate after refusing to pay the local natives tribute, This is told in sometimes gruesome detail as each of the captives are put to torturous deaths until, lastly, Cornel Wilde is stripped naked and hunted down for sport. Wilde plays an excellent part of the solitary white man living from hour to hour by his wits while native warriors use all their skills to relentlessly hunt him down. This is one great movie!
