Plot: A Dublin-based busker and vacuum-cleaner repairman enters into a fruitful relationship with a piano playing florist in a toe-tapping video album directed by John Carney and featuring a cast comprised entirely of professional musicians. He (Glen Hansard of the Frames) was a six-stringed street musician. She (Markéta Irglová) was a flower woman who couldn't afford to purchase a piano of her own. One day, after admiring the musician's songs and asking if he would take a look at her broken vacuum, the flower-pushing piano player discovers that she shares a remarkable sonic rapport with the mechanically savvy guitarist. As their musical sensibilities quickly converge to striking effect, the talented pair soon determines to record an album together. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A Muse Of One's Own
Added 11/15/2009

This is a quirky film. No question. It provides a very interesting twist in today's international multi-cultural society on the standard boy meets girl theme, and in Dublin no less. It also provides a quirky look at a subject that has always interested me, the trials and tribulations of trying to make ends meet while one is waiting to get one's big chance on the musical scene.

As for the boy (Glen Hansard) meets girl (Markita Irglova)part the two, a strong but sensitive Irish lad trying to go from busker (street singer) to the limelight and a displaced Czech gal (with child and mother in tow) trying to make it on her own in up and coming modern day "Irish Tiger" (at least up until the last couple of years) Dublin. The glue that puts them together? Well, she just happens to be something of a muse- and apparently classical trained at that. This one and one half hour film centers on that musical collaboration, the possible budding romance between the two, the baggage and drag of their previous lives and something of a surprise at the end. All the while they are making beautiful music together, really just the music folks (for the most part, although some of his singing is a little over the edge for my tastes). What no over-the top, no gratuitous violence to save a fair damsel in distress, no ironic detachment under the stress of modern living? No. I told you this was a quirky movie.

Reimagining The Movie Musical
Added 9/14/2009

This movie comes as close as any I have seen to what it is like to make music with other musicians. The scene in the music store is a perfect example of those rare moments when two people sit down to play for the first time and "magic" happens. The scene toward the end of the film when the musicians leave the recording studio in the early morning hours captures the essence of recording music perfectly. Unlike some of the other reviewers I liked the fact that they relationship between the Guy and the Girl did not follow the typical Hollywood arc. Another refreshing departure from the standard movie musical was the relationship between the Guy and his father. The music is a matter of taste. I happened to like it and understand that street musicians cannot deal in subtleties; they have to grab the audience by the throat. This movie's other achievement it to reimagining the musical in a more realistic way, and on that level it is a triumph. The music is more organic and not artificially injected into the story. The fact that it was done on an incredibly low budget shows that the concept and story matter more than anything else in making a great film. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
