Plot: Every movie star has to start somewhere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, then little-known outside of body building circles, made his screen debut in this comic variation on the sword and sandal epics popular in the 1950's and '60's. Hercules (Schwarzenegger) has grown tired of his life on Mount Olympus, and wishes to visit Earth. His father Zeus (Ernest Graves) forbids such a voyage, but a misdirected thunderbolt sends Hercules tumbling down the mountain and into New York City, where he's befriended by Pretzie (Arnold Stang), who runs a pretzel cart in the park. As Hercules tries to make his way in the big city with Pretzie's help, he runs afoul of a crooked wresling promoter, gets mixed up with gangsters, rides his chariot through Times Square, descends into Hell, and dines at the Automat (which some contend is not unlike descending into Hell). Just as Hercules is getting used to life on Earth, his angry father decides it's time the boy came home, and Zeus sends Nemesis (Taina Elg) and a handful of other gods to retrieve him. For the original American release of Hercules In New York, Arnold Schwarzenegger was billed as Arnold Strong, and his voice was dubbed by another actor to remove his accent; when the film was re-released on video in 2000, Schwarzenegger's original vocal tracks were restored, though the dubbed version appears on several previous video releases. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

rinse and repeat . this brilliant british activist and bodybuilder affected an austrian accent for the entirety of this fascinating after school special about gettin' buff . subsequently he embarked on a couple of "GONAD THE BARBARIAN" feature films before joining the superb team of hosts (FRAN TARKENTON , MARJOE GORTNER and ED McMAHON) on the scrappy and long running "THOSE REAL , AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE HUMAN ANIMALS" television hour . then he simply vanished *. currently residing in the (where are they now ?) file , lets hope he finds his footing and returns to programing such as this . * much thanks to WIKIPEDIA in writing this review .

Arnold: the exemplary Bodybuilder's body
Added 9/29/2009

It's not until you take a look at contemporary bodybuilders, and what passes for 'gyms' these days, that you will really appreciate the big guys from the 1970's and their culture. Lou Ferrigno looks awesome, but the true star is Arnold. Whether he took steroids or not, growth hormone does not give you proportion, symmetry, height and the natural propensity to build big muscles. So if you want to study a gifted, inspirational athlete, buy this DVD and watch it before going to the gym.

The Best Guy Bods Ever!
Added 9/2/2009

I purchased for my husband who was seriously into weightlifting some years ago. I'm not sure if he's looked at it, I think he said he remembered seeing it when it first came out in the VHS tape format. I plan on looking at it sometime in the future and I decided to purchase it because from time to time, I heard references about it in various media arenas and more recently I was looking at my husband's muscle mag and there was an article about both guys where reference again was made about them in Pumping Iron so I was curious and the price was right! My favorite muscle guys were Lou (The Hulk) & Arnold (Conan and later the Terminator).

The most satisfying feeling you can get in the gym is... The Pump
Added 8/17/2009

Long before classics like Predator, Commando, & Total Recall Arnold was simply known as the funny sounding 5 time Mr. Olympia champion/ ultimate meat stick. Pumping Iron is a documentary about the world of competitive weightlifting as Arnold takes on the Incredible Hulk in a protein laden feats of strength like no other. Being bizarre and hilarious all at once Sid watched in amazement at the homo-erotic battle of muscles. There were numerous times you felt as if Arnold's competition was going to try to make a sexy time with him right on the Gold's Gym floor. The way his bulky admirers would watch do hammer curls was easily some of the strangest footage to date in Sid's movie watching history.

All in all Pumping Iron was a hilarious Arnold experience that just couldn't be taken seriously in any sense. For the true body builder this film has to be something viewed on a weekly basis in hopes of feeling "The Pump," or as motivation before you hit Gold's for an afternoon of back and biceps. The only thing missing from this viewing was a chocolate Peanut butter whey protein shake, 3 pounds of turkey breast, and four boiled potatoes. We've heard there is talk about releasing a collectors edition version which will come welded in a 25lb Kettlebell with a coupon for 50 free pounds of Perdue hormone free chicken breast. On that note we feel we had to change the rating system for Pumping Iron from stars to steroid injections, giving our feature of the evening an enthusiastic 4 steroid injections out of 5.

Back in the day....
Added 7/27/2009

I remember this movie coming out back in the mid 70's. My dad was into pumping iron back then, and I remember him letting me do a little. I was 10 turning 11 during the time this movie was filmed. I laugh when I look at the weight machines/equipment that was in the gyms back then. They seem to primitive and clunky compared to the weights and machines that we use today....I saw Pumping Iron on tv a little while back, and loved it. Seeing Arnold, Mark Katz, Franco Columbo and the other guys in that group working out in their prime was very motivational in my own workouts today. I especially loved seeing big Lou Ferrigno work out, and being coached and pushed by his dad. It was a great time in body building, THE GOLDEN ERA so to speak. Brought back alot of memories of how it used to be. This is defenitly worth having in your collection. Get it, and be motivated....Oh yeah, and wasnt Arnold the COCKY one back then, Ha....

Awful, just awful.

This movie is so bad...I mean...uh...how can I describe how bad it is? It's so bad...it's just terrible. Even if you had an obsessive desire to see a young Sally Field nude, or Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the violin in an inbred-hillbilly ho-down,this movie would still make you angry for the time lost. The exaggerated southern drawl, the many pointless scenes, the horrible scenery and outfits, the abysmal acting. Roger Mosely (TC from Magnum PI) was the best character and actor in this bomb.

Stay Away!
Added 10/9/2008

I thought this was a romance drama with Jeff Bridges and Sally Field. It was the dumbest movie I've ever seen! I couldn't figure out what they were doing. "The Governator," Arnold Schwarzenegger is a philosopher/ body builder and Mr. Olympia contestestant. I couldn't understand what he was saying. Save your money. Buy King Kong ('76) instead.

Stay Hungry - No Sustenance Here!
Added 10/6/2008

I'm sure this movie was written just to showcase 3 great stars: Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's a story about a guy trying to save his gym from being taken by the bad guys. Ho hum! It's a riot to see the biggest of the big (Arnold) standing next to the smallest of the small (Sally Field). She's so cute! Nothing much here except 2 great movie stars and early Arnold with packed-on muscles.
