Plot: This romantic, melancholy twist on the Frankenstein formula stars Peter O'Toole as Professor Harry Wolper, a lonely eccentric who has dedicated decades of research to cloning his long-dead wife Lucy from a culture of living tissue. To this end, he enlists the services of likeable Graduate assistant Boris (Vincent Spano), who is initially baffled by the professor's endless rants about God, Science and The Big Picture. After Wolper posts bills seeking a human egg donor, his wish is granted by the vivacious young Meli (Mariel Hemingway), in whom the professor soon discovers a more willing convert to his grand design... and perhaps a love more immediate and real than the one he lost. Boris eventually manages to come around to The Big Picture himself when Wolper points him in the direction of another graduate, Barbara (Virginia Madsen). Despite opting for a platonic relationship to better determine if they are ideally matched, Boris and Barbara soon fall deeply in love, realizing that they are soul-mates as the professor had predicted. Tragedy strikes, however, when a brain hemorrhage renders Barbara comatose, and Wolper's nemesis Dr. Sid Kuhlenbeck (David Ogden Stiers) persuades the university to shut down Harry's private cloning laboratory. Meli forces Wolper to choose between her love and his misplaced longing for his dead wife... and his answer is suddenly made clear when he witnesses Boris's heartfelt determination to bring his own true love back to the land of the living. Written by Jeremy Leven (based on his own novel), this is a flawed but engaging comedy which proves that a well-written story can incorporate traditional science fiction elements as more than a mere plot device and actually enhance the humanity of the characters. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

I have loved this movie since it came to the big screen. What was more science fiction when it first shown is now very possible. The love of a man to spend his career working towards creating his dead wife of thirty years from her cells. A young woman helps him with giving her eggs and falls in love with the doctor/scientist. In the end love is seen as the "The Big Picture/Eye of God". The young assistant to the doctor shows the power of love when he spends what could be the last thirty six hours of life of his love (who is in a coma). While there is a good outcome for all, the movie does make me cry for the power of love exhibited by the characters.

Wonderful movie. Peter O'Toole is grand. Perfect role for the actor. Story line is multiple-angled. The ending is very emotional. Easy watch - time flies when you watch it. Great music and picture setting. ENJOYABLE!!! I want to buy it and own it.

I saw this movie for the first time on cable when I was about 12. The next time it was on I recorded it on the family VCR and watched it too many times to count until I left home for college. I try to avoid making statements that seem overly melodramatic but I really think seeing this movie so often and from such a young age effected the person I am today, and for the better. I'm 34 now and still find myself quoting it often and, since so few people have seen it, am given credit for being funny and profound when I do. The "Love Formula" proposed by Harry rings as true today as it did when the movie was made, likewise the movie has aged well and is still relevant so many years later. I read the book Creator that the movie was based on and agree with another reviewer that it was a too complex and convoluted novel. It was written by Jeremy Leven who also wrote the screenplay to the movie which is actually the much better telling of the story. In this rare case, the movie was actually much better than the book. However, his other novel, "Satan, and his eventual cure by the unfortunate Dr. Kassler J.S.P.S" was amazing and stands to this day as the most hilarious AND most depressing book I've ever read. Definitely worth checking out. I completely agree with my fellow reviewers that it is a crime that it seems to be impossible to order or download the musical score. If anyone reading this has figured out how, please tell the rest of us.

Unexpected Charmer!!

This movie is an understated gem of a film!! Start to finish, there is always something to make you grin. The performances are very good from all the players, and the dialogue is rich & very witty. Even the plot is quite unique, especially given the era the movie was made in. The central romances of the film--Harry/Meli and Boris/Barbara--are sweet & touching. There is good chemistry shared by all. This film is worth watching!!!

A Touching Story About Unexpected Love
Added 7/5/2007

Peter O'Toole's best work to date. Ms Hemingway was excellent in this film despite the fact that it was one her first starring roles ('Lipstick' may have been filmed first). This movie will bring happy tears to your eyes... It is an incredible story about a Scientist who wishes to clone his dead wife and his relationship with the woman who volunteers to help him do so. This and 'The Doctor' are classics and must see - must have in your library or collection of art/films. I always recommend buying TWO of the classics so you can share or loan one to others. You WILL want to share it...
