Plot: Tod Williams made his feature directorial debut with this teen comedy-drama set in 1983. High school senior and writer wannabe Sebastian Cole (Adrian Grenier) survives a car accident in a remote Southwestern area near the trailer home of a Spanish-speaking woman. As she dresses his wounds, Sebastian looks back over the past year and his dysfunctional family life. After a divorce, Sebastian's near-alcoholic mother Joan (Margaret Colin) remarried. His architect father Hartley (John Shea) was more devoted to career than family. His sister Jessica (Marni Lustig) is off to the West Coast with her dullard boyfriend. Sebastian's stepfather Hank (Clark Gregg) plans a sex change. Since being married to a woman doesn't appeal to Joan, she returns to her native England with Sebastian. Months later, Sebastian moves back to his upstate New York hometown, rejoining Hank. However, Hank is now Henrietta, wearing makeup and women's clothing and serving as both a mother and father figure for Sebastian. Shown at the 1998 {~Toronto Film Festival}. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

I first saw this film in 2001 and didn't see it again until 2008. I thought my tastes would have changed in between, but I liked it more - a true classic.

Not Focused

This movie seems to be the rough draft to a better movie. The premise is good, the acting was ok but the script has so many holes in it it's unbelievable. Sebastian is dull void of character. In fact all the characters in this script are superficial and dull. Adrian is a good actor but why does he choose such dull scripts.

Excellent

I rented this film because I recently saw "The Door In The Floor" (which is one of my favorite films of 2004) also directed by Tod Williams. Having seen this film (his debut) I am extremely impressed with his talents as a writer and director. I just love these characters (in both films). The feeling I had with this film and "The Door In The Floor" is I really didn't want either one of them to end. They could have gone on forever. Its rare for a film to leave you with that feeling...Let alone two films by the same writer/director. Williams is definitely a director to keep an eye on. And any film that ends with a Pixies song is always tops in my book. I am not a fan of the show Entourage but Adrian Grenier really blew me away with his performance in this touching and underrated indie film. I'm just sorry it took me this long to get around to seeing it.
