Plot: This shocking prison drama was inspired by a true story. In 1938, Henri Young (Kevin Bacon), sentenced to Alcatraz for stealing $5, attempted to escape from prison with three other prisoners. One of the escapees was captured, and to curry favor with Warden Glenn (Gary Oldman), he informed on the others. Young was soon brought back to custody, and was to be punished by spending 19 days in solitary confinement. Nineteen days stretched into three years, in which Young was kept in a pit with no light, no toilet, no furniture, and nothing to read. Young emerged from solitary a vengeful madman, and he quickly murdered the convict who turned him in. Young was put on trial for the killing, and assigned a first-time public defender, James Stamphill (Christian Slater). Stamphill was horrified by Young's tales of the conditions at Alcatraz, and he used them as the basis of his defense for his client, believing that anyone would be driven to madness and murder if they had been treated the same way as Young. Murder in the First also features Embeth Davidtz, William H. Macy, Brad Dourif, and R. Lee Ermey. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A surprising film.

Brad Pitt and Brad Renfro, (who died of a drug overdose around the same time as Heath Ledger.) He was a wonderful actor who starred in APT PUPIL, and in the CLIENT as a younger actor. This is a story of a boys prison and guards who sexually abuse them. The worst part? It's a flipper with a snap cover. I hate those flippers but in November 2009 the restored version will be available. I will buy it for sure. A good cast and a well done film, with a happy ending-smile!

Intense.

Sleepers is an unsettling drama featuring an all-star cast. The best performance in the film is Brad Pitt, this role proved he's more than a pretty face. Jason Patric is also terrific here, very under-rated actor. The film deals with abuse, and nothing graphic is shown but you are fully aware about did happen to these boys when they were teens. Great film from a great director, check it out!

Based on a True Story
Added 12/2/2008

Sleepers made headlines even before its release when claims arose that writer Lorenzo Carcaterra had lied about the book being "Based on a True Story." This seems redundant given the BROAD nature of the phrase but never-the-less some cared more about the accuracy of the film than the message that it delivered.

An all-star cast of Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Dustin Hoffman & Minnie Driver et al each provide a unique piece to the overall picture. De Niro's performance of Father Bobby is very convincing. He is the father figure to a lot of the potentially lost youth in Brooklyn.

The message of the movie is simple, these things happen to children because the system is a failure. The ending is a metaphor and it is clear...If justice is indeed blind, then those that are failed by the system can have their wrongs righted by beating the system. This is a great movie to say the least.

Amazing Movie

MURDER IN THE FIRST is one of the movies you want in your library. Kevin Bacon gives the performance of a lifetime. He should have won the Oscar that year but it was released at the wrong time. Tom Hanks won that year.

How many sides does a coin have?
Added 10/30/2009

One side: this is a good gripping court room and prison movie with outstanding actors (Slater, Bacon, Oldman, Macy, Dourif; not to forget Kyra Sedgwick in a brilliant but somehow frustrating `4 minutes'...). Bacon has killed a fellow inmate in Alcatraz and stands trial for murder in the first degree. Slater takes on the hopeless case, his first, and turns it around. The real killer is the system.
Allegedly based on a true story. It is said that the court proceedings led to an investigation of the prison procedures, the shut-down of some of its facilities, and the eviction of the `managing director' of the outfit.
Unbelievable how many faces of evil Oldman can assume.

The other side: the real biography of Bacon's character seems to have been dramatically different, rather not the harmless petty criminal that is portrayed in the film. The real story seems to have been a different one as well.
Does that matter? No, if you just watch it as above average entertainment. Yes, if you get the impression that there is a message here.
The message can still be right, but if it is built on tofu rather than solid rocks, I lose some of my positive attitude.
What made me watch it? As so often, I have no better reason than that the DVD was there... And I like court movies.
