Plot: Based on the novel by William Brasher, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings is set in the segregated south of 1939. African-American baseball pitcher Bingo Long (Billy Dee Williams), tired of being jerked around by the less-than-ethical managers of the Negro League teams, forms his own barnstorming ball club. His partner in this endeavor is black catcher Leon Carter (James Earl Jones). Though boycotted by powerful Negro League manager Sallison Porter (Ted Ross), the Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings flourish, gaining a loyal fandom with every new game and cutting into the League's profits. Finally, Porter offers Long a deal: if the Motor Kings can win one big game with the Negro All-Stars, Long's team will be allowed to join the League. Also appearing in Bingo Long is Richard Pryor as a ballplayer who tries to break through the big-league color line by pretending to be everything from a Hispanic to a Native American named Chief Tokohama; if Pryor seems to disappear for long periods during the film, it's because his role was written to accommodate his many nightclub appearances. The producers originally wanted young Steven Spielberg to direct, but -- inspired by the success of Jaws -- he turned this down in favor of doing Close Encounters of the Third Kind. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The movie I purchased was in excellent condition. I haven't seen it since it was first released at movie theatres and it was a treat to see it again. The quality was nice, the price was very reasonable, the shipping timeframe was very good and I have no complaints whatsoever!!

Witty, funny, and an important piece of African American history

This fictionalized account of the Negro League baseball of the 1930s just before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier is based on real incidents and persons. It is fast-paced, at times very funny and at times tragic. Racism, politics in the Negro League, and much about the African community at that time combine with a terrific cast to make this movie entertaining and educational. Billy Dee Williams is charismatic as always, James Earl Jones is terrific, we wish we could see more of Richard Pryor, but the whole cast turns in an excellent performance. A rich set of special features is included.

This is a funny, well acted look at the Negro Leagues and barnstorming before the integration of Major League Baseball. Many of the details in the movie are based on historical facts. There really was a woman owner in the Negro Leagues, for example. More to the point, the movie correctly illustrates some of the greed and corruption within the league, as well as some of the issues the players faced. It also captures the experience of a barnstorming club and the often clownish antics players sometimes had to engage in to attract attention. It also is a pretty funny movie starring Billy Dee Williams as a Satchel Paige-esque pitcher who's supremely self-confident, so much so that he throws his world famous "Invite Pitch" to hitters without players manning the field. James Earl Jones is a treat as Leo Carter, a hard-hitting, no nonsense catcher. Look for Richard Pryor in a smaller, but funny role as Charile Snow, who's convinced he can break into the Majors by pretending to be Cuban as Carlos Nevada. This is a great movie no baseball fan should miss.

Bingo Long is a fun movie, describing a bitter period in American History, and American Baseball History.

The story is based on the true story of Jackie Robinson, Sachel Paige, and Josh Gibson. Bingo Long is based on Sachel Paige, and Esquire Joe is loosely based on Jackie Robinson. The movie is fun, and it delves into the relationships of the black players and the Negro League owners. They only touch gently on the racial issues, and focus more on the greed of the Negro League owners. Billy Dee Willims (Sachel Paige) and James Earl Jones (Josh Gibson) are real and fun. But at the end of the day, they are both bitter about being excluded from the "White Only" major leagues.
