Plot: This debut drama from writer-director Lee David Zlotoff (creator of the TV series MacGyver) won the audience award at the 1996 {~Sundance Film Festival}. Alison Elliott stars as Percy Talbott, an ex-convict who's come to the small Maine town of Gilead in the hope of finding work and a place to start her life over again. With the help of the local sheriff, she lands a waitress job at the Spitfire Grill, eventually winning over the crusty owner Hannah (Ellen Burstyn) and simple-minded fellow waitress Shelby (Marcia Gay Harden) with her hard work and trustworthiness. Percy even finds a new love with a woodsman, Joe (Kieran Mulroney) and befriends a hermit (John M. Jackson) who lives in the nearby woods and is regularly fed by Hannah. When Hannah falls ill, Percy devises a scheme to help her sell the café in a national contest, but Shelby's husband Nahum (Will Patton) doesn't trust Percy's motives -- and his suspicion leads to tragedy. The Spitfire Grill, which played as a cross between To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), got initial financing from an organization of Roman Catholic priests and sold at {~Sundance} for a then-record $10 million. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

does anyone ever find a happy enduring love life?

For most men this is an extremely boring film?
All this worry about their emotional lives
and having a good relationship that lasts
seem hard to take.
I really didn't much like this film as well acted
and written as it is.
There is an all star cast and they all do a very good job in their roles,
but it just seem pretty futile to me...

For once, I have found a movie version of a book is BETTER than the book. I have the book, but the movie presentation makes the book a major disappointment. This movie was superbly cast with excellent performances. Our family has viewed this video repeatedly and still enjoys it. It was a great addition to our family's video library.

This is a lovely movie about women from different generations and their stories. My favorite part is that they come together to make a wedding quilt and that is how we learn most of their life stories.

How to Make an American Quilt

I did not expect to enjoy this film as much as I did. It is about a group of women that have been working in a quilting circle together for many years. Each contributes a square to the quilt using the theme where love resides. As each member works on their individual square, we are taken back in history with them to see how events and choices have shaped their lives. This is a very intense and poignant story that will have a hankie moment or two.

I think I have watched this movie 50 times since getting it. Its a wonderful movie with some really tallented actors. It was $20 at the local Walmart, I am glad i was able to get a good deal on it :)

I think you have missed something here.....

I have not read all the reviews, but based on the one's I have, it looks like none have caught what this movie actually was. Like Billy Budd, this was not a tale of redemption (though it could be seen as that). It was the tale of Jesus. She was doubted and crucified(shot), she saved the world (town) and she rose from the dead (the new girl with a living child). She also raised the dead (EB's son), forgave those who tresspassed against her (the husband of her friend), was falsely accused,
healed the sick (finding that the trees provide a cure for cancer).

Love the film - though I do not fall for the message - but if you did not spot that, I suggest you watch it again......

This will become a classic, it has meaning and is well done

This movie would be beloved by a person of faith, but you needn't be that person to find meaning in this movie. Like many movies that stand the test of time, there is wonderful character development. You feel understanding and compassion for the heroes, and the villians. Most important, you remember the importance of relationships for healing. It is only when we confront the other, stay in there when it is difficult, can we be changed.
