Plot: A space bum helps rescue a princess from an evil overlord with the help of a benevolent elder in this Star Wars send-up written and directed by Mel Brooks. Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog co-pilot, Barf the Mawg (John Candy), are content to scour the galaxy living the easy life. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Although it borrows most of its plot from the Star Wars series, Spaceballs also pokes fun at Star Trek, {-Snow White}, and Planet of the Apes -- as well as the entire videocassette and movie marketing industries. The large supporting cast includes Dick Van Patten, Jim J. Bullock, and the voice of Dom DeLuise. John Hurt makes a cameo in a parody of the exploding chest scene he played in Alien. ~ Brian J. "Don't make a fuss; I'm just plain old Yogurt!"

This is the one that should've been director Mel Brooks' comeback film. It comes very close to recapturing the magic of the old comedies, but again, there's too many stale jokes & juvenile levels of humor marring the proceedngs. Still, "Spaceballs"--which parodies several landmark sci-fi films, particularly "Star Wars"--has some very funny moments in it, courtesy of the cast. Brooks plays roles on the good & evil side of the "Schwartz" coin--that of the dapper but despicable President Skroob and the dwarfed movie-merchandise peddler Yogurt, sort of a Jewish Yoda. Next generation comic talents John Candy & Rick Moranis have a field day as the half man-half dog alien Barfolomew (Candy), and the malevolent miniature villain Dark Helmet (Moranis). Luke Skywalker & Han Solo are merged into one hapless hero, Lonestar (a smirkingly amusing Bill Pullman), while newcomer Daphne Zuniga plays the feisty spoiled Princess Vespa, much as Carrie Fisher played Leia. Even Brooks film veterans Dom DeLuise & Dick Van Patten lend a hand as the disgusting mobster Pizza the Hut (Dom; get the joke name?), and the slightly kooky King of Druidia (Van Patten).
The film's probably at its best when doing satirical in-jokes; you can't help but snigger at the absurd invention of "instant cassettes", the "Spaceballs" merchandising running gag, or when Lonestar complains: "Just what we need..a Druish Princess!" With Candy replying: "Funny, she doesn't look Druish!"
"Spaceballs" is what it is: An amusing & occasionally fun sci-fi spoof. It's just a shame it became another example of Brooks' then wobbly track record at the box office.

This is Mel Brooks' greatest movie achievement. The next is his Life Stinks film. The story is marvelous, the action, great! The diologue, so funny and the locations, just grand. It is a shot of pure Mel Brooks, something we have not been given in many of his movies. It tells a linear story that makes you feel very satisfied at the end. Get it, enjoy it and do not look back.

Enjoy fellow spaceballs!

John Candy's #1 Film
Added 9/23/2009

John Candy has been in A LOT of films but none bring out his true nature like Spaceballs.

It's got everything: stunning visuals (not REALLY stunning, but sure, its got good visuals for the 80s), hilarious humors and jokes, and a REALLY intense plot (notice my sarcasism). Okay, the story may have been sort of easy, but either way, it was a great film! Laughter filled me up! A great film to watch!

No english subtitles!!!??
Added 8/28/2009

I liked it even with the corney jokes. But my major beef is that it has spanish and french subtitles, But not English. What gives? Does Mel Brooks think there are no hearing impaired in the English speaking world? My hearing is fine and I still frequantly have the subtitles up.

one of the all time best spoof movies
Added 8/2/2009

the only way that you will be able to like this movie is if you like spoofs . if you like movies like Airplane , Naked Gun or Blazing Saddles then you will love this movie . this is my favorate spoof ever ! I remember it when it first came out , I bought the tape then and I love it today , own the DVD . this is a classic comedy spoof that will probably never be beat (especially with the lame spoofs that are coming out today) . if you are one of the rare people that have never seen this movie , it is a must to watch .
