Plot: Gorgeous goyish guy meets Jewish radical girl in Sydney Pollack's glossy romance. In 1937, frizzy-haired Red co-ed Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand) briefly captures the attention of preppy jock Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford) with her passionate pacifism, while the writing talent beneath his privileged exterior entrances her. Almost eight years later, the two are reunited in New York, when well-coiffed leftist radio worker Katie spies military officer Hubbell snoozing in a nightclub. Through her force of will, and in spite of his smug rich friends, the two opposites fall in love, sparring over Katie's activist zeal and Hubbell's writerly ambivalence after a failed first novel. They head to Hollywood so that Hubbell can write a screenplay for his buddy-turned-producer J.J. (Bradford Dillman). But the House Committee on Un-American Activities' Communist witch hunt in 1947 tears the pair apart, as a pregnant Katie refuses to keep silent about the jailing of the Hollywood Ten, while a faithless Hubbell decides to save his career. When the two meet again at the dawn of the '60s, TV hack Hubbell and A-bomb protestor Katie feel the old pull, but they have to decide if it's worth the grief. Although blacklisted writers had returned to Hollywood -- and won Oscars -- by the early 1970s, the HUAC sections of Arthur Laurents's screenplay were still considered dicey, resulting in substantial cuts; Laurents reportedly blamed star Redford for not fighting them hard enough. Regardless of the edits, and critics' complaints about the film's schlockiness, 1973 audiences went for the well-executed and still politically tinged weepie, turning The Way We Were into one of the most popular films of 1973 and Redford into a major heartthrob. Streisand won an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and the Streisand-sung title tune won for Best Song. Despite the eviscerated politics, The Way We Were poignantly captures the insoluble dilemma of reconciling private desires with public awareness. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

I ordered this movie because I heard from Sarah Jessica Parker that it was a great movie. I love it. It does get pretty sad but It's a great flick, a classic. I got it here for only $3 and some change. Barbra Streisand rocks!

For any Sex and the city lovers out there, Carrie and her friends referred to this movie when Big ran off and married another women. After watching that particular episode for the 100th time I found this movie on Amazon. Hell if you want to find anything it can be found on Amazon. Back to the movie, I wasn't even born when this came out and after watching it. It is by far one of the best love movies I have ever seen. Actually, I'm still unable to cry about the ending but I feel it coming. Excellent purchase. Thank you Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.

an annoying big budget tale

The film is annoying for its pretentiousness and loose ends. The most realistic sequence is when the mousy Katie takes advantage of Hubbell's drunken condition in a NYC nightclub to take him home to sate her lust. Throughout the picture the hapless Hubble seems unable to push her off. The romance consist mostly of her efforts to intrude herself into his life which she at once resents and covets. It never makes any sense why Hubble and his friends are able to party and have affairs in NYC at different during the war while in the Navy. The war was a very cushy experience for all. It was not your dad's war, the one in which people slogged through Europe and the Pacific and got killed or maimed. Also, weird is the way the accidentally meet years later seemingly unconnected. What about the kid? Hubble didn't care? This very aggressive Jewish girl from NYC wasn't down his throat for increased support payments every time he made another buck?.Add the loose ends to red propaganda that saturates several scenes and you might need an antacid.
