One of Neil Siomon's best - if not the best- comedy ever! Classic Jack Lemmon and Walter Matheau! After viewing the VHS over and over I finally had to buy the DVD, as I had worn out the tape! Great comic timing, wonderful cast! And the extra DVD with commentary by those who are still with us, is insightful. Makes you feel part of the whole thing. I STILL reach for this film on a dull day, and STILL laugh out loud! Thanks always - Neil Simon, cast and crew!

Good DVD of the TV series version

This is a great DVD to watch, unfortunately my husband ordered the wrong one, he was looking for the movie version, this is the TV series version. So if you like the TV series version, this is the one for you.

*Funny* Movie With Nice DVD *Extras*

I saw Neil Simon's ODD COUPLE on cable the other night and I enjoyed the movie so much that I had to buy the DVD. I'm glad Amazon had it in this ODD COUPLE CENTENNIAL COLLECTION 2-DVD SET which I purchased immediately.
The movie is hilarious! It's about two middle-aged men who are friends and find themselves single again. Oscar Madison (Matthau) is divorced, living alone, and a total slob when his friend Felix Ungar (Lemmon), gets thrown out of his house when his wife has had enough of Felix's nit-picking and obsessive cleanliness. They couldn't be more different than night and day, but Felix ends up moving in with Oscar and together they find out how far they can push their friendship.
Both Lemmon and Matthau are a great combination having great on screen chemistry together. Herbert Edelman as "Murray," John Fiedler as "Vinnie," David Sheiner as "Roy," and Larry Haines as "Speed" are wonderful as the poker boys; and even though they only had a small part Monica Evans as "Cecily" and Carole Shelley as "Gwendolyn"--the Pidgeon Sisters--also make this movie memorable. The soundtrack is outstanding and I like seeing the outside shots of NYC.
The movie looks great on DVD and I love the theme music. The second DVD has good behind the scenes extras with interviews in the present with cast members David Sheiner and Carole Shelley, Director Gene Saks, Studio Head Robert Evans, talk show host Larry King and Chris Lemmon and Charlie Matthau (they look just like their dads) who talk about their fathers. There are also pictures from behind the scenes etc., and the set comes with small fold out 4-page booklet with notes.
If you like 60s stuff and classic comedy, I highly recommend THE ODD COUPLE-CENTENNIAL COLLECTION.

A Comedy Classic Finally on Special Edition DVD!

Finally,the moment fans of this classic piece of comedy gold have been waiting for is finally here!The Odd Couple on the Paramount Centennial collection!I loved this DVD,from it's clear sound and picture,to the special features,which features a documentary,and a commentary by Jack Lemmon's son Chris,and Walter Matthau's son Charlie.Now Neil Simon's classic tale of two extremely opposite men living together is available as a wonderful collector's item.It's about time!

A Nicely Oiled Bit of Clockwork

"The Odd Couple" is one of those popular and mutable classics that has gone through so many iterations, and been performed so many times - with the concept of the obsessive neat-nick paired with the lovably casual slob having become such an enduring entertainment convention over the last forty years - that its completely refreshing to go back and discover the original source; Oscar and Felix, played by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau at the height of their powers, in Neil Simon's enduring creation. Razor-sharp, yet subtle, not an obvious comic pratfall in the whole two hours; The Odd Couple is not, strictly speaking, a comedy of manners, but rather that of characters. Create them, create them whole, with all their foibles just a titch larger than life, (so that they might be seen from the back balcony) set them down in an uncomfortable situation, wind up the plot (such as it is) and watch them go. On one level this is not just about slobby Oscar, and his neurotic house-guest Felix; they are just at the center of a constellation of other quirky and beautifully played characters - the giggly Pigeon sisters and the other poker-playing buddies. It's as satisfying as watching as an incredibly ornate and complicated bit of Rube Goldbergish clockwork mechanism go through it's set paces. It's not that this release of movie version of the hit play will be new, fresh and startling - it is just so very satisfying in watching it performed by masters.
As is usual with the Centennial collection releases, the quality of the disc itself is fantastic, and the additional features are lavish; the most interesting for fans is a collection of memories of the shooting, from the surviving cast members. One small thought - how very odd to be reminded at the time that Jack Lemmon was a huge star in movies, and Walter Matthau very new and relatively unknown; the director took a bit of a risk in casting him.
