Plot: Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

Good movie

Interesting idea, our world covered by endless oceans due to global warming. People somehow surviving in a world like that. A few flaws, like wooden boats and towns ... where's the trees? But still beautiful underwater scenes.
Kevin is his normal Quiet Hero self, and Dennis Hopper is hilarious as the villian. A good movie that got horrible reviews that it didn't deserve. Well worth watching.

If you are a fan of Waterworld then this is a must buy as not only do you get the original theatrical cut but also the extended version which i must say made a lot more sense to the story telling & fills in some of the gaps that the original had not to mention you get more of James Newton Howard's music score which I also hope gets a future release

Under-Rated and Maligned, but a Great Action Movie
Added 8/3/2009

I am pleasantly surprised to see I am not the only person who immensely enjoyed Waterworld, the unfairly maligned diamond in the rough that was almost universally panned when it was first released. To me, the film is essentially The Road Warrior on water instead of the desert. However, just because it copies the formula on another great post-apocalyptic action thriller, in no way diminishes the entertainment value. The film does have some logical gaps, and the acting by Costner is a little flat, but the film works for me within the realm of its own world - it is possible that with the world covered by water, and very few people left, there could be a dichotomy of civilizations remaining. The atoll people would live a meager existence, in an almost sustainable fashion, while the smokers are living a dead-end lifestyle that's fueled by the remnants of the past: canned food, Jack Daniels, cigarettes, and a dwindling supply of oil in an ancient tanker.

This film is a lot of fun, don't let the bad press keep you from this unfairly maligned film.
