Plot: The feature-film debut of multi-talented filmmaker Clive Barker, this grim and surreal project is based on the writer/director's own novella {-The Hell-Bound Heart}. The film opens with a chilling prologue in which globe-trotting pervert Frank (Sean Chapman) -- a connoisseur of sexual depravity seeking the ultimate sensual experience -- purchases a small, intricate puzzle box from an unseen dealer in an unspecified country. Upon solving the puzzle, Frank opens the door to a hellish alternate universe and is promptly torn to ribbons by a network of hooks and chains; his strewn body parts are subsequently collected by the Cenobites -- grotesque, S & M-clad denizens of hell. The story continues several years later, when Frank's brother, Larry (Andrew Robinson), moves into Frank's abandoned house with his daughter, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence), and his new wife, Julia (Clare Higgins). An accident causes some of Larry's blood to spill on the attic floor, which somehow triggers Frank's hideous resurrection. His body only half-composed, Frank seeks the tacit assistance of Julia -- with whom he had once had a torrid sexual liaison -- in restoring him to human form. Still secretly in love with Frank, Julia assists him by seducing men from the town and bringing them back to the house so her undead lover can drain their bodies of blood. Her increasingly furtive behavior arouses the suspicions of Kirsty, who had already moved to an apartment to get away from her despised stepmother. After following Julia and her next potential victim home, Kirsty comes face to face with the still-incomplete Frank, narrowly escaping with her life...and with the puzzle box. After losing consciousness, Kirsty awakens in the hospital, where she manages to solve the box's intricate mechanism and summon a trio of Cenobites -- including their apparent leader (played by Doug Bradley and dubbed Pinhead on subsequent sequels) -- who are prepared to claim her. In desperation, Kirsty offers them a bargain in which they agree to spare her soul if she leads them to Frank. Kirsty soon returns home to find Julia with her father...whose behavior has become disturbingly unnatural. Realizing that her father has become Frank's latest victim -- and that her uncle is now walking around in his brother's skin -- Kirsty hands Frank over to the Cenobites, who have particularly evil plans for their old friend. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

One of the WORST movies ever made
Added 10/19/2009

I really don't understand all the positive reviews this movie has, i can only imagine that most of them come from people that saw the movie in it's own time, and maybe in some warped up, currently unexplainable way, back then it was something to watch. But in the present though, and having watched this movie recently, after hearing about it for a long time, i have to say this is one of the most mediocre movies i have EVER seen. Merely making it to the ending was a chore, i usually try to finish movies i start watching, but this one had me heading for the hills.

It is NOT scary, it is NOT interesting, it is NOT anything. It's just a mindless gorefest, for which nothing of what is shown is explained, not even why these demons from another dimension seem to like rubber so much. It's just plainly BORING, after this i tried to see if there was any hope for the series by attempting to watch the sequel, couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. There's few movies that leave such a huge negative mark on me, that their mere mention can even eliminate any mood to watch movies, but this certainly is one of them, i can't stress it enough, it is HORRIFYING.

Even the old friday the 13th and freddy kruger movies, that gold old after a couple of sequels, are more tolerable to watch than this huge piece of crap. If you appreciate good horror movies, stay away from this.

silly humans and some cheesy effects
Added 7/29/2009

The blood is too thick and gooey, the skin with hooks in it is very obviously latex, and the Cenobite with the shades is more goofy than scary.
Also, I must point out the silliness of some of these humans and of the plot elements:
1. Why did the pleasantly bland fellow get remarried to such a horrible woman?
2. If you see that your dad's head is bleeding for no apparent reason, wouldn't you immediately assume that something is terribly wrong?
3. Who the heck moves into a house with rats and bad plumbing when they don't have to?
4. Why is the word "Cenobite" never really explained?
5. When a homeless guy comes into your place of business and starts eating bugs, wouldn't you call the police?

And so on.

There's such a fine line between silly and scary, isn't there?

A Different Kind of Monster
Added 6/7/2009

I always truly appreciate a movie or a book that has a villain or a monster that is based on an original concept. The Cenobites aren't slashers, or vampire-type creatures, or any other cliche monster. They're the denizens and worshippers of a Hell whose purpose is not punishment, but pursuit of pleasure through torture. Disturbing.

Clive Barker's Hellbound Heart adeptation is fairly good
Added 4/28/2009

After reading Clive Barker's novel The Hellbound Heart(Hellraiser's inspiring story)before watching Hellraiser I've noticed many discrepancies between the two, and id say the novel is better. However if you haven't read the book I believe you'll enjoy this movie(despite some weak acting). I don't want to summarize the movie but I will say it is twisted and disturbing even up to today's standards. The DVD set is fairly solid and the visuals have been improved. It contains one disc with the widescreen movie(93 minutes), 5 interviews(ea. about 15 mins), theatrical and TV trailers, Commentary, a slide show, and first and final screenplays. Overall its worth buying, but READ THE NOVEL AFTER WATCHING HELLRAISER.

Nice Set Up...Confusing Execution
Added 6/13/2009

I watched HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2 last night and...it made about as much sense as the first time I saw it.

The opening was interesting and it was nice to see Ashley Laurence back, but the movie carries on with a conventional horror structure without thinking through the Hellraiser landscape.

Kirsty, Ashley's character, charges into the alternate universe to rescue her father. But armed with what? Everyone else is easily massacred but Kirsty is completely impervious to everything. Why? Does she have something special or has she tapped into some power to combat the evil? Not really. She's the lead character so she's never really threatened. And the reason she went charging in is pretty much discarded and never resolved.

There's a brief and disappointing "battle" between the Cenobites and the new Cenobite on the block, but it's over before you have any idea of what just happened. Looked cool.

Also good to see Clare Higgins back...but what exactly was she in this?

In the second half, I just went along for the ride since things happened that didn't make a lot of sense. These movies have a cool concept...but I don't think they've really thought things through. They think of cool images and scenes but they never really applied a lot of logic to them.

An Inferior Sequel
Added 4/21/2009

After Clive Barker's Hellraiser made a substantial amount of money at the box office and introduced a new horror icon in the form of Pinhead, a sequel was inevitable. The sequel, which is only executive produced by Barker, boasts increased production values, more blood, and more Pinhead. Unfortunately, it also has a weak plot and an embarrassing new cenobite.

The film opens with a quick recap of how #1 ended, before we see (briefly) how Pinhead came to be his nail-studded form. Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) from the first film is now in a psychiatric hospital after the carnage is discovered at her father's home. Kirsty tells the police and staff what happened, but not believes her of course. Soon, however, the malevolent Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) who runs the hospital has succeeded in resurrecting Kirsty's step-mother Julia (Clare Higgins), who (like Frank from the first film) has no skin. Also along for the ride this time is Tiffany (Imogen Boorman), a patient at the hospital with a talent for solving puzzles. And, of course, Pinhead and his fellow cenobites have much more screen time.

Pinhead's entrance is so grandiose; it's almost comical...But, a worthy (second) introduction to the character.

Now, the makeup effects are much more gruesome this time around. Julie does look frightfully grotesque. I advise you not to eat while watching this movie. Seeing her does make one's stomach churn. Although, it's worth noting that nothing about this movie is disturbing, but much of it is disgusting.

There is some pretty good imagery in this film though and the set/art direction is certainly more finely crafted. Some of the visual effects are, however, incredibly 80s and as such have not aged very well.

As for the character's, Channard is a caricature. He has a foreboding voice and is instantly untrustworthy. When he appears in cenobite form, I shook my head a little. He looks like a cross between a Power Rangers villain and a creature from Beetlejuice.

With that said, I still find the cenobites to be some of the more unique creations to emerge from 80s horror. The fact that their whole existence is shrouded in mystery makes them all the more fascinating...And what makes it so disappointing that they had to dig deeper into the Pinhead character. He was such a menacing presence in the first film; I think the decision to expose his humanity wasn't very wise. It doesn't bring much depth to the character and succeeds only at making him less frightening and therefore less effective.

Overall, it's the plot that breaks this film. While the direction by Barker protégée Tony Randel is even-handed, Peter Atkins' tedious, extraordinarily weak plot struggles to fill its 96-minute running time. While not a complete failure it doesn't succeed as a sequel or even on its own merit. Yes, parts will satisfy the gore-starved horror fan of America and much of it looks pretty cool but all-in-all it's pretty inferior to its much better predecessor.
