Plot: The satirical bite of Gogol's play {+The Government Inspector} is dispensed with in favor of traditional Danny Kaye buffoonery in The Inspector General. Kaye plays the illiterate stooge of two-bit medicine-show- entrepreneur Walter Slezak. Abandoned by Slezak, the starving Kaye wanders into a corruption-ridden Russian village, which is all geared up for a visit from the Inspector General. Mistaking Kaye for that selfsame royal inspector, the townsfolk fawn on the confused Kaye, granting him his every whim and plying him with all sorts of bribes. In the original Gogol play, the boorish phony inspector takes advantage of the villagers' error by laying waste to the town and seducing a few local maidens; in the film, Kaye is as pure as the driven borscht, as is his true love (Barbara Bates), the only honest person in town. The treachery is in the hands of Slezak, who fakes Kaye's death and tries to blackmail the crooked local officials. The deus-ex-machina arrival of the real Inspector General foils the crooks and places the nonplused Kaye in the job of town mayor. Those of you who read the play in college may remember it ends with everyone frozen in horror when the genuine inspector shows up, with Gogol's stage directions insisting that the actors hold their fearful poses for a full sixty seconds. Be assured that in the film version of Inspector General, nothing stands still--least of all Danny Kaye, who cuts quite a swath through several Sylvia Fine/Johnny Mercer specialty songs. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Very poor visual quality. You get what you pay for, so buyer beware. Wish I hadn't purchased this.

Classic clean comedy

I like Danny Kaye's humor and comedic acting abilities. He was truly a genius and a triple threat; singing, acting, dancing. I purchased the DVD since it's rare to find these types of classic comedies on cable. The Inspector General was one that I saw MANY years ago and remember how much I liked it. However, there were a couple of scenes where the dialogue may have been edited. I say this because when I saw the original version on tv, the funny "lines" were quite memorable. When I heard those "lines" again on the dvd, they weren't exactly the same. It seemed as though they omitted certain words. The film wasn't bright or crip in color and definition. I plan on purchasing his other movies and hopefully I can find the unedited originals that are digitally remastered. I suppose like the distributor is a factor as some of the other reviewers have pointed out.

If you love to laugh!

the Inspector general made me laugh when this first came out in 1949 and it makes me laugh today. This is my all-time favorite Danny Kaye movie that even children today continue to enjoy over and over.

The picture quality was a bit grainy, but for the money it is still a great buy. If you're just going to watch it once or twice this should be fine, but if you are a big fan & will watch it repeatedly then I would probably recommend the higher quality version already recommended by another reviewer. (Called the ROAN Studio production - look at the "product details/Studio" for this info. This DVD is the ALPHA Studio version.)

In any event this is a great movie - perhaps his best!

A treasure!

Danny Kaye is one of America's gifts to the world. In Inspector General, we have one of his funniest movies, where a sequence of mistaken identities is parlayed into a hilarious farce. Other movies have tried the same, but none with greater success!

The crowning moment of the movie is an extended one, where Danny Kaye sings a "gypsy song". Oh my! If nothing else does, this piece, involving song, violin playing, and complicated choreography, establishes Kaye as one of the great geniuses of musical cinema. Those ten minutes (or however many they are) are alone worth the price of admission. May this movie long stay in print, uncut in any way!
