Plot: Somewhat based on the life of author Anais Nin, this beautifully photographed erotic outing from director Zalman King (Wild Orchids, 9 1/2 Weeks) tells the story of an aspiring American writer who comes to Paris to hone her craft and ends up exploring the full extent of her sexuality. Initially, Elena's dream was to become a writer of serious literature, but that of course does not happen overnight. In the meantime there are expenses to be met, so when a wealthy and extremely handsome French novelist (whom she has been secretly watching every morning as he rows up and down the Seine) offers her a small fortune to write erotic stories, what can she do but accept the offer? She quickly discovers however, that it's difficult to write of life's sensual pleasures when one has not experienced them and so, sets off to educate herself. Her schooling leads her to a variety of steamy situations and locales with an equally broad assortment of tutors. Though filled with all the bells and whistles expected of such a film, which was originally rated NC-17 but later released on video with a tamer R-rated version, King's film has been widely panned by critics as ostentatious, trite, and worst of all, not nearly as sexy as it tried to be. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This is an amazing "movie", if you can actually call it that. Its a great soft-porn movie, if thats what your looking for.

Just Like I remembered...

I had a VHS of this movie years ago but it was eaten by a VCR, so I was really happy you had this movie. The quality is great, it arrived safe and sound. I'd recommend this seller and of course this movie anytime.

This is a film based on the novel by Anais Nin. I love that it showed the political side of the era (in the time of Nazis) as well as the sexual awakenings and dynamics of the times. The sex scenes are graphic, but appropriate and fitting to the storyline. (Honestly without those scenes you wouldn't have a movie). two thumbs up from me.

Nin would be happy with this film

Although it does not follow the book, the essence is there. The cinematography is rich and lush, with a sensual and erotic feel. The music is evocative of the period, and in its self moves the movie forward, the sound track would be worth owning. The cast melds, meshes and melts together. This really is a picture about a woman's inner thoughts and fantasies, it is not a pornographic film at all. But if you watch it with you honey, a little candle light, some wine, and an open mind, a good night should be had.

Shallow pornography

Cinematography was very good but the writing was obviously a carrier for a pornography film. I a not a prude but I do know a good story and well-developed, if not admirable, characters when I see them. Acting was adequate for such a poor film. However, how are actresses supposed to act in pornography?

I bought this opus expecting erotic fantasies.....geee, I was mistaken.
Yes, there is some nudity which hardly erotic and not a fantasy at all.
I guess its hard to imagine new things, after all humanity familiar with erotic fantasies no more than a couple years, yeahh, like say 5000?
If you looking for fantasies try Italian flicks as my favored Tinto Brass.
