Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury... Pitch Black the morning after
Added 11/5/2009
Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury: 5 out of 10: At 30 minutes this stand alone short resembles a Saturday morning cartoon rather than a plot bridge between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. (And Lord knows if any movie needed a plot bridge it was Chronicles of Riddick.)
The animation is a mixed bag with a lot of the 3d spaceship work leaving a bit to be desired (too shiny for one thing). And while the voice work is authentic, the story is a true one off throwaway. (Hammy and very unlikely villains happen to pop by.) The story may be a throwaway but it does at least give it points for being coherent. (And Lord knows if any movie needed a coherent story it was Chronicles of Riddick) The action scenes are generally well done with a little violence thrown in for good measure.
Certainly one gets the gut feeling that Dark Fury could have been a lot worse. Despite the decent amount of extras the DVD doesn't really work as a stand-alone product. It would however have made a fine second or third disk in the Chronicles of Riddick or even Pitch Black DVD releases.

pretty good as animated features go
Added 9/7/2009
Riddick is a sort of villain turned good guy:
you never know when he is going to be just a bad guy
who is sometimes good?
Riddick is a sort of superman with dark glasses
and an attitude you can't cut with a diamond drill?
I enjoyed the space opera effect that this movie has:
Luke Skywalker Riddick isn't, but he has his own
attributes. They have made three movies in the sequence so far.
I've liked all three, but can't give them great makes
as movies.

Dark Fury Riddick Chronicles Part II
Added 6/10/2009
It kind of helped link Pitch Black to the last Chronicles of Riddick, but I wish it had been live instead of a cartoon. The animation as good, but it was very "out there". Guess you have to be a graphics junkie to appreciate it. I prefer live action movies myself, but I wanted to keep the Trilogy together, and if it was the only way to do it? Well....It's not very long, so you can jump right into the last dvd in short order, so that was a good thing.

This was done in the AniMatrix style. It was a little short, but done well in my opinion.

Animated Short Riddick Movie
Added 7/15/2008
Got the three Riddick movies as a gift and watched all three over the weekend. I can't believe I liked them so well. In this cartoon segment of the Riddick saga, Riddick, Jack, and Imam end up on a ship conveniently owned by a collector of master criminals (a female) who is anxious to add Riddick to her collection. (She freezes her victims but they are still alive.) I remember this storyline from a Star Trek when a collector tried to collect Data. This reused storyline still worked well for this, particularly because this was so short. I think it would have been a mistake to make this longer. It was just the right length to hold my interest. The animation is interesting in this, very stylized and unique.

cool new hero for today's youth market and cgi effects!
Added 7/15/2009
A relative told me it reminded him of "Dune" which I scoffed at because I love David Lynch's "Dune" because
A) I'm a David Lynch fan and
B) I did NOT read Frank Herbert's famous book which maybe would have spoiled the movie if I were to demand it be a faithful adaptation.
Anyway, what he meant was that Chronicles of Riddick had aesthetic similarities with Dune, which is to *some* extent partially true, but Riddick is a cgi movie and so doesn't look the same. I prefer sorta fake models to sort of fake digital ships. I don't quite get how people look at cgi and think it looks real. I suppose it is a very willful suspension of disbelief. Give it a few years and all these cgi movies will look fake and terrible and people will laugh at them.
The plot is messy, the dialog not too bright, the acting campy, but it is a fun ride. I admit it grew on me. Saw some on TV and it doesn't stink as much as I first thought. It looked as if a boardroom in Hollywood had come to the conclusion they need a more urban, "hip" hero for today's youth market or something. Like the scene with the pitbull alien beast. Riddick is *bad* yo! "Ahhh hell, ya done messed up now son, Riddick gonna get ya!" I'm getting old.
2.5 stars.

An Entertaining Mess
Added 6/14/2009
I won't go into detail, but this sequel to the sleeper hit pitch black is a bit muddled because of so many characters, places, and subplots simply making it too much, but it does have it's moments(death by teacup). Hopefully the sequel will correct these issues because after that conan ending, I'm curious as to if they have anything special in store.
